- Venables provides positive injury update for Kip Lewis
The Sooners seemed to have received good news in regards to one of their stars on the defense.
Oklahoma football coach Brent Venables provided a positive injury update Monday on his weekly coaches show about star linebacker Kip Lewis , who left the 17-10 loss Saturday at Michigan with an apparent knee injury.
"I think we got maybe some good news and he'll be back sooner than maybe we initially thought," Venables said Monday.
Lewis, a 5th-year linebacker, is one of the leaders of the defense and his absence could complicate things in the future if it prolongs.
After the game, Venables said Lewis would "miss some time", but the team got possibly some positive news on his apparent knee injury. He left in the first half and didn't return to the game.
Junior linebackers Cole Sullivan and James Nesta stepped in for Lewis throughout the game. The Sooners even experimented with 6th-year linebacker Owen Heinecke moving to the will while Sullivan or Nesta swapped to the mike.
It complicates the depth of the linebacker room if Lewis is out for more than a week considering a trip to No. 2 Georgia and a matchup with No. 1 Texas in Dallas is on the horizon.
"Lose a guy like Kip. I mean, he's a good player, but I thought the other guys came in, and we reestablished a rhythm session, especially in the second half," Venables said postgame Saturday.
