Victor Bericoto's big night not enough as Giants' bullpen falters vs. Dodgers originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
For the second consecutive night, the Giants hung with their rivals for much of the game at Dodger Stadium.
But for the second consecutive night, the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a big inning against San Francisco reliever Philip Abner , and it was more than enough to seal a 10-4 win on Saturday.
Entering the eighth inning leading 3-2 on Friday, the Dodgers teed off on Abner for four homers to seal that victory.
A day later — this time with the score tied at four — Abner relieved starter Yunior Marte in the fifth inning with two out and runners on first and second. Los Angeles then proceeded to plate three runs on a walk and two singles, and left fielder Turner Hill's outfield assist prevented a fourth run from coming across in the frame.
The Dodgers added three more runs in the sixth inning off of Joel Kuhnel to put the game out of reach.
Marte, who took the loss, finished with a line that perhaps looks worse than it truly was. He allowed six earned runs — two of which scored after he exited — on eight hits and three walks, while striking out two in 4 2/3 innings.
On the other side, the Giants' bats fared well against Tarik Skubal , tagging the two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner for four earned runs in five innings of work. It's the most runs Skubal has allowed in his nine starts with the Dodgers since he was traded at the deadline, and tied for the most he has surrendered all season.
Victor Bericoto, who was activated from the injured list on Friday, unloaded for a 425-foot, two-run homer to dead center in the third inning, erasing the Giants' first deficit of the night.
In the fourth, with his team trailing a second time, Jonah Cox delivered yet another RBI sacrifice bunt that scored Andrew Knizner from third base.
In the fifth, Bericoto and Jung Hoo Lee hit back-to-back doubles to right-center field to tie the score for a third time.
Unfortunately, the Giants didn't have a miraculous fourth comeback in them. They will look to avoid the sweep on Sunday, with first pitch set for 1:10 p.m. PT at Dodger Stadium.
