- Victor Oladipo’s Comeback Plea Reveals Thunder’s Greatest Trade Chain
(Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports)
The Oklahoma City Thunder probably should not answer Victor Oladipo 's request for another NBA opportunity, but they should appreciate what his name represents. Oladipo recently wrote an open letter to NBA general managers explaining that he believes he is healthy and capable of contributing again. The 34-year-old deserves consideration somewhere after fighting through several serious injuries. However, Oklahoma City 's crowded backcourt and championship expectations make another reunion difficult to justify.
That does not make Oladipo irrelevant to the Thunder's present. In 2016, Oklahoma City traded Serge Ibaka to the Orlando Magic for Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova and the draft rights to Domantas Sabonis . Oladipo then averaged 15.9 points during his only season with the Thunder. One year later, Sam Presti packaged Oladipo and Sabonis to acquire Paul George from the Indiana Pacers .

George eventually became the centerpiece of the 2019 trade that brought Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to Oklahoma City. The Thunder also received Danilo Gallinari and a massive collection of draft compensation from the Los Angeles Clippers . That means the path from Ibaka to Gilgeous-Alexander ran directly through Oladipo. One transaction did not magically create the current Thunder, but Presti's willingness to keep transforming value helped make this era possible.
That history does not mean Oklahoma City should offer Oladipo a roster spot out of respect. Cason Wallace , Ajay Mitchell , Jared McCain and Nikola Topić already need opportunities alongside Gilgeous-Alexander and Alex Caruso .
Taking minutes from one of those guards to conduct a nostalgic experiment would work against the developmental system that built this team. Oladipo might provide leadership, but the Thunder already possess veterans and strong internal chemistry.
Still, Oladipo's comeback attempt should remind Thunder fans that championship teams are rarely created by one brilliant move. They are built through years of connected decisions, including trades that may not appear historic when they happen. Oladipo never became an All-Star in Oklahoma City, and his stay lasted only one season.

Oladipo's story also demonstrates how quickly an NBA player's role can change. He arrived in Oklahoma City as a possible long-term running mate for Russell Westbrook , but became part of something much larger. His Thunder tenure was brief, yet the decision to acquire him helped create possibilities that still influence the franchise today.
Yet his place in Thunder history remains secure because he became an essential link between the organization's original core and the Gilgeous-Alexander era. Sometimes the most important value a player provides is what his arrival allows a franchise to do next.
