The Minnesota Vikings have earned the right to pursue a championship upgrade. They have not earned a reason to ignore the price.

At 6-0 after Sunday's 16-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, the Vikings should offer their own 2027 second-round pick and the Philadelphia Eagles' 2027 third-round pick for running back Jonathan Taylor before the November 10 NFL trade deadline.

The hypothetical package gives the Colts two selections while allowing the Vikings to retain their first-rounder, their own third-rounder and their current backfield depth. It is a serious offer, with a sensible ceiling.

Why Taylor fits the Vikings

Brian Flores' defense has allowed 74 points through six games. An offense capable of generating more consistent scoring would make that foundation considerably more dangerous.

Sunday illustrated both the opportunity and the limits of Minnesota's running game. Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason combined for 94 rushing yards. Taylor produced 95 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries against the Vikings, including a 38-yard scoring run.

One matchup does not establish his trade value. It does demonstrate the explosive potential Minnesota would be buying .

Jones' latest knee setback adds urgency, although Kevin O'Connell described him Monday as day-to-day. The Vikings should pursue Taylor as an upgrade rather than pretend Jones has suffered a confirmed long-term absence.

Keeping Mason also matters. Trading a reliable alternative while Jones manages an injury would weaken the depth Minnesota is trying to strengthen. Taylor could lead the rotation, with Jones contributing as his health allows and Mason preserving flexibility for the Vikings .

Why Indianapolis should consider the offer

The Colts are 2-5 , have lost three straight and are operating under interim general manager Ed Dodds following Chris Ballard's dismissal. Those circumstances warrant evaluating expensive veterans, without assuming ownership has authorized a teardown.

Taylor remains valuable, and Indianapolis recently extended him through 2028. The Colts therefore need meaningful compensation to justify reversing that commitment.

Two selections in the second and third rounds provide opportunities to replenish the roster. Both would arrive in the next draft, rather than forcing Indianapolis to wait another year for part of the return. The Colts could use those selections at several positions instead of replacing Taylor.

Minnesota acquired the Eagles' third-round selection in the Jonathan Greenard trade. Using that additional pick would preserve one third-round opportunity while strengthening an offer built around its second.

The financial commitment sets the limit

Taylor's contract makes this more than a deadline rental. Minnesota must evaluate the remaining 2026 salary, applicable bonuses and future guarantees before committing.

The Vikings would not inherit Indianapolis' entire cap charge, because previously paid signing-bonus proration stays with the Colts. That distinction improves the immediate calculation without making the following seasons inexpensive.

Indianapolis could still demand more, given Taylor's production, his recent extension and potential interest from other teams.

The Vikings should hold firm rather than add a first-round pick or surrender valuable contributors. Taylor would elevate Minnesota's backfield , but he cannot solve blocking issues or eliminate every offensive inconsistency.

A second-round pick and an additional third give the Vikings a credible offer that balances their championship ambitions with future needs. That is a price worth paying, even if the Colts ultimately decide to keep Taylor.
