FOXBOROUGH — After reviewing the film of Monday’s 33-15 win over the Giants, there was one play along the sideline that Christian Elliss regretted, but it wasn’t the hellacious hit he laid on Jaxson Dart .
Elliss went viral for sending Dart airborne as the Giants quarterback tightroped the sideline in the first quarter, but as soon as he saw the replay on the Jumbotron, he knew that was a good tackle.
The Patriots linebacker’s regret came on New York’s final drive.
With 2:10 left as the Giants tried to mount a final comeback, Dart found Devin Singletary in the flat, and Patriots cornerback Carlton Davis missed a tackle. As Singletary cut upfield and ran up the sideline, Elliss tried to give him a shove out of bounds.
“I kind of laid off,” Elliss said.
It wasn’t enough to knock Singletary out of bounds, and the Giants running back tightroped for an extra eight yards.
"Looking back on it, I was like, ‘I should have laid another shoulder on him,’" Elliss said.
Mike Vrabel has made a habit of showing his players footage of what ballcarriers can do along the sideline and it’s resonated with Elliss, who set the tone physically on Monday.
“That’s happened multiple plays, where a quarterback, you think they’re protecting themselves and they lower their shoulder and they’ll hit one of our DBs. They’ll lower their shoulder and hit one of our LBs that are just trying to corral them out of bounds,” Elliss said. “So for us, we’ve got to play smart, but when the opportunity comes to lay a hit on an important piece of their offense, we’re not going to shy up. We’re not going to pull up from the opportunity.”
