- Wahine hoops picked 4th; Bailey Flavell gets preseason honor
In its debut season in the Mountain West Conference, the Hawaii women's basketball team was picked to finish in the top half and landed one player on the 10-member preseason all-conference team announced Wednesday.
Sophomore Bailey Flavell, who was named the Big West Freshman of the Year last season before Hawaii moved conferences over the summer, was one of eight guards selected to the roster.
The Rainbow Wahine were picked to finish fourth in the conference, just behind UC Davis, which also is debuting after leaving the Big West.
UNLV, which received 16 of 22 first-place votes, earned the to spot in the preseason poll, followed by Grand Canyon.
UNLV's Meadow Roland was named the Preseason Player of the Year while Grand Canyon landed the MWC Preseason Freshman of the Year in guard Lanelle Wright and MWC Preseason Newcomer of the Year in guard T'yana Todd, a fifth-year transfer from Ohio State.
Flavell, who averaged 12.6 points per game last season, set the UH freshman scoring record of 415 points passing Judy Mosley, who had held the top spot since 1987.
She also led the team in 3-pointers made (43) and made free throws (96) and started every game.
"I think I clicked with all of my teammates," Flavell said Wednesday of her first season at UH. "I think all of that just comes down to my teammates and how we work together and the trust we have in each other, and then the coaches for them for allowing to play how I want to play."
Flavell and sophomore post player Ritorya Tamilo joined first-head coach Khalilah Mitchell at the Old Trapper Basketball Media Day event in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
Hawaii will play an exhibition against Hawaii Pacific on Oct. 21 before opening the 2026-27 season at Oregon on Nov. 2.
"We play our style of basketball. We have a different style coming and we're excited about it," Mitchell said. "I just want to make sure that we are doing what we need to do as a staff and as a team to be prepared to play how we want to play. That's the one box I want to check — being in shape."
