Washington DT Anterio Thompson drafted by Atlanta Falcons

Anterio Thompson has had his name called in the NFL Draft.

The former Washington defensive tackle was selected with the 208th overall pick on Saturday, going to the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round. Thompson joins Huskies alums Michael Penix Jr. and Bralen Trice with the Falcons.

Thompson spent his first two seasons at Iowa Western Community College before transferring to Iowa, then Western Michigan, before spending his final season on Montlake. He had one of his best seasons with the Huskies, totaling 30 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 2 pass deflections in 13 games. For his career, Thompson had 65 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and 4 pass deflections.

He landed firmly on NFL radars with his performance at Washington's pro day, where he ran a 4.73 40-yard dash and recorded 30 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. His history of three blocked punts in college also helped him rise up boards and get into draftable range.

Atlanta just traded defensive tackle Ruke Orhorhoro to the Jacksonville Jaguars for defensive tackle Maason Smith , so Thompson will enter a room that is in flux under new head coach Kevin Stefanski. Penix also tore his ACL midway through last season, so the Falcons may start Tua Tagovailoa - signed from the Miami Dolphins this offseason - for the first portion of the season until Penix is healthy.

Thompson is the sixth Husky to be drafted, following wide receiver Denzel Boston, cornerback Tacario Davis , running back Jonah Coleman , offensive lineman Carver Willis, and cornerback Ephesians Prysock .

Brugler had this to say about Thompson: "Thompson needs to develop better consistency, but his upfield quickness, raw strength and special teams impact (three blocked punts in college) are intriguing qualities that can be further developed."
