SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies men's basketball team has just six players returning on its 15-man roster for the 2026-27 season.
Only one of those players, fourth-year guard Wesley Yates III, was a consistent starter for the team in the 2025-26 season.

The Huskies were plagued with injuries and inconsistencies last season that resulted in several players missing significant portions of time, if not the majority of the season.
One of those players was first-year forward Jasir Rencher.
Rencher was ranked as a four-star recruit and the 125th-best overall player, 28th-best small forward and eighth best player in California in the Class of 2025, per the 247Sports composite .
It was thought that Rencher would be seldom-used entering the season and would instead be a player to developed. That was the case to begin the season. He was limited to just 25 minutes across his first three games of action. The majority of them (18 minutes) came in a double-overtime win against Southern University on Nov. 18.

He was on the court for five more games after that point, but recorded minutes in four of them. He played a total of 39 minutes in his final four games of the year and hit the double-digit market in three of his last four contests. He averaged three points per game on 50% shooting from the floor and pulled in 1.8 rebounds in his eight games played.
Rencher's season ended prematurely due to an abnormal heart beat, which kept him out for the rest of the year and resulted in him undergoing surgery.
This offseason, clips from practice have been shared showing Rencher practicing. He played in 16 minutes and scored eight points in the team's 109-91 loss in an exhibition game against the Boise State Broncos on Oct. 17.
"I'm back on the court," Rencher said after a practice Tuesday at Alaksa Airlines Arena in Seattle. "There's nothing I like doing more than playing basketball. So just being able to be back on the court is a blessing. ... It's been a process. I was out for a long time, but I just want to take care of my body so I don't get injured. It's been just taking it day by day, being confident in my ability to play basketball, not worrying about anything happening to me because I have a defibrillator in."

Rencher had a defibrillator implanted to pace his heartbeat. Since he's done so, with his mother by his side throughout the whole process, he hasn't had an arrhythmia. He also wears a WHOOP band on his wrist that tells him his beats per minute, which hasn't exceeded 158 beats per minute.
He and the coaching and training staff will continue to monitor his heart throughout the season. But, as of now, it seems like there isn't a consistent concern with his condition.
With Rencher's condition seemingly in the rearview mirror, he has the ability to pick up where he left off last season and become a key part of this new roster, which the sophomore is high on.
"I love the guys we have," Rencher said. "We're gonna be good. We are very connected off the court and on the court. So, as long as we continue to be connected on the court, I feel like we'll have success. We just gotta talk a little bit more and be more active on defense. But after we clean up everything on the defensive end, we're gonna be solid."

Despite having only eight games of playing time under his belt and several new additions to the coaching staff compared to his freshman season, there is an added pressure on Rencher to help his new teammates get acclimated to the Pacific Northwest, and he's taking that role in stride.
"I still know what coaches want," Rencher said. "I still know what (Sprinkle) expects out of everyone. I feel like just being part of the team last year and just knowing what coach wants, that's been a huge factor. I can relay the information to the team."
Rencher and the rest of UW will begin its season against the Colgate Red Raiders at 7 p.m. PT on Nov. 2 at Alaska Airlines Arena.
