The status of CJ Abrams drew questions for a variety of reasons ahead of the offseason. After dazzling in 2026, would the Washington Nationals opt to make a decision on his future with consistent trade interest ahead of the deadline materializing as calls from fans picked up for an extension to instead come to fruition? Additionally, after announcing a position move in the second half of the 2026 season, where Abrams would ultimately suit up come Opening Day in 2027 was its own debate.
Yet president of baseball operations Paul Toboni is expected to have to address the question surrounding Abrams' future once again after Robert Murray reported on Tuesday that teams are expected to continue calling about the Nationals' star infielder.

Maybe the bigger question will be whether the Nationals' asking price changes this offseason compared to last as Toboni and the front office have been consistent they have evaluated offers rather than shopping the star infielder. The ongoing trade speculation last offseason eventually led Toboni to clarify the organization's stance a number of times, eventually publicly refuting a report even about outfielder James Wood. Fast forward to year two, whether the asking price proves to be any different is the biggest question.
Abrams put together a monster year offensively that sparked his second All Star selection, teaming up with Foster Griffin and James Wood to represent the Nationals in the Mid-Summer Classic, after nearly recording multiple career highs through the first half of the season. Abrams also became the first National since Bryce Harper in 2018 to start in the All Star Game, a notable feat for the star infielder. Abrams went on to post his second consecutive season eclipsing 30 home runs, in addition to comfortably setting a new career high with 106 RBIs.
The questions for Abrams has been centered around his defense after ranking dead last among MLB shortstops in fielding run value through the first half of 2026, though manager Blake Butera pointed to improved metrics over the final two months that have at least set Abrams up to answer the question through his play in spring training.
While the unresolved collective bargaining agreement plays a role in what Abrams' situation ultimately materializes into, the uncertainty surrounding his future remains among the most pressing questions for the front office to answer, in addition to upgrading a dreadful pitching staff across the board. Yet whether the noise materializes into anything different ahead of 2027 may be the biggest question that answers the direction of the organization's rebuild.
