Camilo Duran was cruelly denied the chance to score his first Colombia goal after Peru defender Miguel Araujo took a red card to prevent the Celtic striker from racing through on goal.
The Hoops forward was finally handed a meaningful opportunity to impress by Colombia boss Nestor Lorenzo, playing the final 30 minutes after receiving just five minutes of action across the opening three matches of the international break.
And it did not take Duran long to demonstrate the qualities Celtic supporters have quickly become accustomed to seeing.
The striker robbed Araujo with a tackle inside his own half before driving towards the Peru penalty area with a clear route to goal.
Araujo, seemingly determined not to allow his mistake to turn into a Duran goal, brought the Celtic man down before he could reach the box and was shown a straight red card.
Colombia capitalised on their numerical advantage to secure a 2-0 victory.
Duran was described by the Colombian media as operating in a 'false nine' role following his introduction, playing off out-and-out striker Kevin Viveros.
It was another encouraging step for the Celtic forward at international level and a welcome victory for Lorenzo, who had faced criticism following Colombia's defeat to Paraguay in their previous outing.
Speaking before the game, Duran made clear that he had been encouraged to reproduce the form he has shown at Celtic since joining up with the national team.
Duran said: "I've felt good. Ever since I arrived, the staff have given me the confidence to do the same things I'm doing at Celtic. Let's hope I can keep doing the same things I'm doing at Celtic.
"I'm happy, happy to be able to be in such a wonderful group as the national team and enjoying every training session, and every game when it's my turn. I'm happy to be here.
"We expect victory. A Colombia team that plays good football, that's what all Colombians want, and we hope that it happens for us."
