The New Mexico Lobos come off their best season in more than 40 years as they host the Central Michigan Chippewas on Saturday night in the season opener for both squads.

New Mexico, expected to compete with UNLV for the top spot in the new-look Mountain West Conference, took a hit last week when starting quarterback Jack Layne went down for the season after elbow surgery. Multiple quarterbacks are expected to play on Saturday, and the Lobos bring a strong defense into play, led by linebacker Jaxton Eck. The quarterback battle looms between senior James Laubstein, Oregon transfer Luke Moga and Toa Fa'avae. New Mexico finished 9-4 last season after an overtime loss to Minnesota in the Rate Bowl.
Multiple quarterbacks are the norm for Central Michigan, which rotated three of them last season, with two of them returning in 2026. Angel Flores and Jadyn Glasser, back from an injury that kept him out for much of 2025, lead a group of six QBs, with Brock Townsend expected to emerge as the feature back. The Chippewas closed out a 7-6 campaign with a lopsided loss to Northwestern in the GameAbove Sports Bowl and placed fifth in the preseason Mid-American Conference poll.
Saturday's matchup marks the first-ever meeting between the Chippewas and the Lobos.
