BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Mets , had another player from the 2025 Eastern League championship roster make a Major League Baseball (MLB) debut. Former Rumble Ponies reliever Anthony Nunez pitched two perfect innings in his MLB debut for the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend.
The 24-year-old was selected in the 29th round of the 2019 draft, spending two seasons as an infielder in the San Diego Padres organization before being released.
An NCAA eligibility rule, which permitted former minor league ballplayers' eligibility if they held a certain threshold of years of games played, allowed Nunez to play at the college level, but prevented him from joining a Division I or junior college program. After meeting the criteria, Nunez was granted eligibility and played at the Division II level at the University of Tampa.
The Spartans made Nunez a two-way player after a curious bullpen session found his pitching skills hitting the high 90s (miles-per-hour). Nunez signed with the Mets as a free agent in the summer of 2024 after helping the Spartans win a national title and was then traded to Baltimore at the 2025 deadline.
