College basketball fans will get an early look at two programs with enormous expectations Wednesday night when the Louisville Cardinals visit the Kansas Jayhawks for a preseason exhibition at Allen Fieldhouse. The matchup was already attractive because of the history surrounding both programs, but a stunning development involving Kansas has made it considerably more interesting.
Former Purdue standout Trey Kaufman-Renn officially joined the Jayhawks on Monday, October 19, giving Bill Self another experienced frontcourt player just weeks before the regular season. The addition comes after the 6-foot-9 forward received another opportunity to compete at the college level, and his arrival has immediately become one of the biggest stories surrounding Kansas basketball.

Trey Kaufman-Renn's Arrival Changes The Conversation
Kansas made one of the most surprising additions of the college basketball offseason when Self announced Monday that Kaufman-Renn had joined the program. The former Purdue forward averaged 14.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists during the 2025-26 season while shooting 57.8 percent from the field.
He also recorded 11 double-doubles, demonstrating his ability to impact games through scoring, rebounding and physical play around the basket. Kaufman-Renn averaged 20.1 points during the previous season, further illustrating his offensive ability.

His arrival comes after freshman Grant Mordini suffered a season-ending patellar tendon injury, creating an opening on the Kansas roster. Self confirmed that Kaufman-Renn had enrolled in classes and was already practicing with the Jayhawks.
The veteran forward's experience at Purdue could make his transition easier than that of a typical newcomer, although his participation in Wednesday's exhibition has not been officially confirmed. Regardless of whether he plays, Kaufman-Renn's addition gives Kansas another significant storyline as the regular season approaches.
Louisville Brings A Familiar Face Back To Lawrence
While Kansas fans will be excited about their newest addition, Louisville has a player who knows Allen Fieldhouse extremely well. Bidunga returns to face his former teammates after leaving Kansas for Louisville during the offseason.

The athletic big man gives Cardinals coach Pat Kelsey another frontcourt option, and his familiarity with the Jayhawks adds an interesting dimension to the matchup. Louisville has also added talented players such as Jackson Shelstad and Karter Knox, creating a roster with several intriguing offensive possibilities.
Wednesday's game provides an opportunity to evaluate how those pieces fit together against a Kansas team with considerable size and experience.
The programs met in an exhibition last October, with Kansas earning a 90-82 victory in Louisville. This time, the Jayhawks will have the home-court advantage. The atmosphere inside Allen Fieldhouse should make the exhibition feel considerably more important than its unofficial status suggests.
