Thus far this season, Cruz Azul, one of the giants of Mexican soccer, has gotten off to a slow start, sitting 12th on the Liga MX table with just six points through five matches courtesy of a 2-0-3 record. Cruz Azul started the season off with two wins, 3-2 over San Luis and 2-1 over Puebla, before suffering three straight defeats: 3-2 at the hands of Atlante, 2-1 against Club Tijuana and 2-0 against Atlas.
Leagues Cup play, a competition between Liga MX and MLS teams, did go better for Cruz Azul, as the Mexican side defeated the Philadelphia Union 1-0 and New York City FC 2-1 before falling against the Chicago Fire, 2-1.
Necaxa, meanwhile, hasn't fared much better, sitting 11th on the table with seven points, one more than Cruz Azul. Necaxa has two wins, one draw and two losses on the season. Most recently, Necaxa drew 1-1 against Pumas UNAM behind a 76th-minute goal from Julian Carranza, an Argentine forward with previous stops at Inter Miami, Philadelphia and even Leicester City. Carranza's first season with Necaxa is off to a flying start, as the 26-year-old has seven goals through 10 matches with his new club.
