San Diego Wave FC finished second in the 2026 NWSL Shield race after defeating Bay FC 1-0 on the road at PayPal Park on Decision Day. Gotham FC secured the Shield with a 2-0 victory over the Utah Royals on Sunday, finishing the regular season three points ahead of San Diego.
The No. 2-seeded Wave will continue its historic season in the quarterfinals, hosting the No. 7-seeded Royals on Friday at Snapdragon Stadium. San Diego will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs until the championship game.
Kenza Dali assisted Mimi Van Zanten's ninth-minute goal, while Sandra Paños recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season in San Jose. San Diego earned the result it needed to remain in contention for the Shield, but Gotham took care of business against Utah. The Washington Spirit finished third in the standings.
Trinity Byars won the ball inside the box and played a short pass to Dali. The veteran midfielder spotted a sprinting Van Zanten on the right side, and the rookie defender launched an angled shot into the left side of the net to give San Diego an early lead. The ball sailed just over goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz's outstretched hand.
It was Van Zanten's second goal of the season and Dali's fourth game-winning assist of 2026, a new club record. It was also Dali's 50th start for the Wave. San Diego signed Van Zanten to a multi-year contract extension two weeks ago, keeping her with the club through the 2029 season.
Van Zanten's goal proved to be the difference. San Diego finished with advantages in possession (57%), shots (12), saves (4), and corner kicks (6). The Wave have now gone seven consecutive games without a loss and haven't lost since Sept. 6.
The fifth season has been a remarkable one for the Wave, who set new standards throughout the regular season. San Diego finished with 18 wins and 58 points, extending its single-season club records in both categories. Sunday's victory was also the Wave's 10th road win of the season, setting another club record.
The Wave's defense has been a major part of that success, allowing 31 goals in 30 games. Kennedy Wesley and Kristen McNabb played all but one minute together on San Diego's backline this season, the most of any center-back pairing in the NWSL. Wesley also played every minute of the Wave's 30 regular-season matches, becoming the first Iron Woman in club history.
Now, San Diego turns its attention to the playoffs.
The Wave (18-8-4, 58 points) will host Utah (14-5-11, 47 points) in the quarterfinals on Nov. 6 at Snapdragon Stadium. San Diego won both meetings this season: 2-1 on the road back in March and 4-2 in August.
The Royals enter the playoffs on a four-game winless streak. Utah midfielders Mina Tanaka and Cloé Lacasse lead the team in goals and assists. Tanaka has scored nine goals and has five assists this season, while Lacasse leads the team with 18 goal contributions (8 goals and 10 assists). Tanaka has been dealing with a hamstring injury, and her status for Friday night remains unclear.
