Manchester United have been terrible so far this season, and it has left Michael Carrick's job hanging by a thread.
After the latest embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth , even Carrick himself looked like he was expecting the sack. However, it has been revealed that he will remain as the head coach going into the Chelsea game this weekend.
The ex-midfielder led United back to the Champions League last season with some terrific performances, while the attack impressed under Carrick.
Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo all reached the 10-goal mark in the Premier League during their debut campaigns.
However, Sesko and Cunha have struggled so far this term, with the Slovenian out injured at the moment. Mbeumo has registered four goals in the league.
Rooney makes "Cuckooland" claim
No one would argue that Manchester United's new-look front three had incredible seasons last term, but they were all solid and had impressive spells throughout the season.
Many supporters were hoping that all three would be able to kick on this year, but for various reasons, that hasn't happened so far.
Wayne Rooney has been speaking about the trio and has offered a damning verdict, claiming that United's leadership are 'deluded' if they think Mbeumo, Cunha and Sesko are good enough to lead United's attack.
"They're deluded if they think the front three that they've brought in are good enough; they're not," Rooney said on The Overlap's Stick To United .
"They want some players who've played in the Premier League. They're bringing players in from Wolves, from Brentford, who have done well and done well for them clubs.
"But to take this current group of Manchester United players, for them to sign and to take this team into the next level, into the Champions League, you know, you're living in Cuckooland if you think they're going to achieve that. So the squad is absolutely a million miles away from being champions."
Poor squad planning...again
Rooney isn't wrong about the quality needed to become Champions – but like other issues, this also comes down to squad planning from those in charge at Old Trafford.
Everyone knows that Mbeumo and Cunha are at their best as inside forwards. They were both brought in to occupy those roles under Rúben Amorim.
But now, with Carrick at the helm, United want to play with wingers, and neither of those players thrives when playing near the touchline. Mbeumo's best position in this current United side is upfront, but that isn't exactly ideal for him or the team.
Sesko's issues are mostly related to injuries, but it makes it even worse that United did not think to sign another striker in the summer.
Rooney's words on the three attackers might be harsh, but ultimately, United have not helped themselves with the lack of long-term planning.
