Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune spoke warmly about Mitchell Weiser 's emotional return to competitive football following Saturday evening's 1-1 draw away at Cologne. The 32-year-old finally made his comeback after 14 months on the sidelines , entering in the 83rd minute at the RheinEnergieStadion. Weiser had not featured competitively since Werder's May 17, 2025 away fixture against Heidenheim.
He subsequently suffered a serious ACL tear last summer. The fact that his return came in Cologne made the occasion particularly poignant. The Troisdorf native came through Köln's youth academy and made his Bundesliga debut for the cathedral city side.
"Yeah, you saw that he was all footballing heart and soul," Thioune said when questioned by Sky Germanyabout Weiser's return. "He had tears in his eyes [when facing the FanKurve]. To be here [in Cologne] was something special. I don't think he was expecting minutes, but I needed someone in the center. There were emotions on display. I don't think there was a more lovely location for him to make his comeback. It was cool. It was a moment."
Weiser himself acknowledged afterwards just how much the moment meant to him.
"Of course, a few emotions came up because it had been such a long time," Weiser said in the mixed zone. "I obviously missed being on the pitch and fighting together with the boys very, very much. When I started feeling really good on the training pitch over the last few weeks, 18:30 in Cologne was definitely my goal."
Thioune returned to the subject at his post-match press conference, where the Bremen trainer acknowledged both the emotional significance of the appearance and how far Weiser still has to go physically.
"That was probably the best moment Mitchell has experienced in the last 14 months," Thioune said. "As you all saw he had some tears in his eyes. This moment, here in Cologne at his [near] hometown club, it was a cool moment for all of us. Really insane.
"It's also equally insane for me to tell you that I thought he was going to break down with exhaustion after ten minutes on the pitch," Thioune continued. "But that's all part of the [recovery fitness] project."
Weiser essentially confirmed Thioune's assessment.
"After those ten minutes today, I was breathing as heavily as I normally would after 90," Weiser admitted.
