At long last it's finally game week for several programs around the country and this game week will be extra special for West Florida. The longtime Division II power program is set to make its long-awaited FCS debut later this week. The Argonauts will host #16 Southern Illinois at their home in Pensacola, Florida on Thursday night with a chance to make a triumphant entrance into their DI era.
This move has been a long time coming for the Argos. It was announced over the spring that UWF would be joining the UAC this year and leaving behind its spot in the Gulf South Conference where it had been since the program's inception back in 2016. In its short ten years of existence, West Florida has posted a winning record eight times, won three conference titles and won the 2019 Division II national championship. It's been an impressive rise for a team that, in several ways, has always felt like it was destined for the next level.
"We're working every day," said Argonauts head coach Kaleb Nobles in an interview earlier this offseason. "We've been working for years to just be great and play great football. It doesn't matter the level, doesn't matter the division or the opponent. Our mission is always the same, and trying to build champions for life."
Now West Florida is here and their first game sets up to be a great one. Southern Illinois is another program that expects to win and has won. Nick Hill's Salukis have been a playoff team three times over this decade and again bring with them an abundance of talent into this season, namely star fifth-year quarterback D.J. Williams. Williams is one of the subdivision's best signal callers and might be the purest dual-threat talent in the country. SIU has its sights set on making a run in the Missouri Valley; always one of the FCS's toughest leagues.
West Florida's task on Thursday night is not an easy one but they may be more equip to handle the job than some give them credit for. Containing Williams will be top priority and the Argonauts defensive line brings back some notable playmakers. Byron Puryear has 15.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks since joining the team from the College of Dupage back in 2023. Injuries have been his biggest issue but when healthy he's a game wrecker. Also up front will be senior defensive end Will Fennema who transferred in from Wayne State this year. Fennema was selcted as the defensive MVP for the Warriors in 2025, logging 7.5 TFLs and 2.5 sacks.
That is, of course, just one of the many matchups that the Argos will have to find an edge in if they are to spring the upset and if they do, what a statement it would be. A win over a Top 20 team right out of the gates would certainly generate some national buzz. In fact, they would almost certainly receive votes when next week's polls come out and might actually find a spot in the rankings. It would also send a message to the UAC and to the country that UWF is the real deal; a message that will probably come through in earnest down the line eventually anyways.
Despite not being eligible for postseason play for three seasons as is customary for transitioning teams, West Florida has, at the very least, the look and historical prowess of a team that can contend sooner rather than later at the FCS level. They've risen quickly since their inception. They're ahead of schedule, especially compared to many others who make the jump. Just how ahead of schedule are they, though? How they perform under the lights in a few days will reveal that answer. It's the highest-profile game that they've seen over at Pen Air Field and it might just be the springboard to a wildly successful new chapter.
