West Ham United have reached an agreement to sell Crysencio Summerville to Al Hilal in a deal worth up to £60m, a late intervention from the Saudi Pro League club that pushed Roma out of the race for the Netherlands winger. The Saudi side's offer, understood to be £55m guaranteed with a further £5m in add-ons, arrived within hours of Roma's own proposal and was accepted immediately by West Ham. Sky Sports News reported that Roma had tabled £39m for Summerville on Monday, only for that bid to be rejected as Al Hilal returned with an offer nearly double the size. News of the Saudi club's interest was first broken by Sky in Italy 's Gianluca Di Marzio on Tuesday afternoon, and West Ham moved fast once the improved terms landed on the table. Summerville is expected to undergo a medical, with a long-term contract in Riyadh to follow pending final authorisation.

A Late Hijack From Riyadh
Roma had spent weeks working on a deal to take Summerville to the Stadio Olimpico, viewing the 24-year-old as a direct replacement for a forward line reshaped this summer. Their opening approach of £39m was designed to test West Ham's resolve, but the Serie A club will not return with an improved offer. Sky in Italy has reported that Roma do not plan to match Al Hilal's package, effectively ending their pursuit of the winger.
Roma's own transfer window helps explain why they were prepared to walk away rather than match Al Hilal. Gian Piero Gasperini, who joined from Atalanta last year and guided Roma to third place in Serie A and a return to the Champions League, has made only two permanent signings so far this summer: defender Daniele Ghilardi from Verona and forward Donyell Malen , whose loan from Aston Villa was made permanent. Gasperini confirmed the club had stepped back from the Summerville talks, telling reporters "in general we have to be better, because the market moves quickly," while insisting Roma would still strengthen before the window closes. Roma have also lost Zeki Celik to rivals Juventus on a free transfer, even as Paulo Dybala , Gianluca Mancini and Bryan Cristante all agreed contract extensions to stay through 2027, 2029 and 2028 respectively.
Manchester United had also monitored Summerville's situation, though those conversations never developed beyond initial, exploratory contact. Any Old Trafford move was always tied to Marcus Rashford leaving first, and with Rashford's own future at United unresolved, the race for Summerville was left to Roma and Al Hilal to fight out between themselves.

From Rotterdam to the London Stadium
Summerville joined West Ham from Leeds United in the summer of 2024 for a fee reported in excess of £25m, arriving as the reigning Championship Player of the Year after helping fire Leeds back to the top flight. Born in Rotterdam, he spent a decade in Feyenoord's academy without making a first-team appearance for the club, building his reputation instead on loan at FC Dordrecht and ADO Den Haag before Leeds gave him his breakthrough.
His first season at West Ham produced seven goals and five assists in 34 appearances as the club slid closer to relegation from the Premier League. It was enough to keep him first-choice on the left flank and to convince Ronald Koeman, back in charge of the Netherlands for a second spell that began in January 2023, that he belonged in the squad for this summer's World Cup.
A Bright Tournament, a Painful Exit
Summerville arrived at the World Cup in form and stayed there. The Netherlands topped Group F unbeaten, drawing 2-2 with Japan before beating Sweden 5-1 and Tunisia 3-1, and Summerville scored twice in the win over Sweden as he shared the group-stage scoring load with Cody Gakpo . Four appearances brought him two goals and two assists, numbers that will have caught Al Hilal's attention as much as anything he produced in a West Ham shirt.

The tournament ended in cruel fashion. Morocco knocked the Netherlands out in the round of 32 at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, drawing 1-1 after Gakpo's 72nd-minute goal before winning 3-2 on penalties. Summerville stepped up in the shootout, only for goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to beat away his effort and send the Dutch out of the tournament earlier than at any World Cup in their history.
How West Ham Got Here
West Ham's relegation was as painful as it was avoidable. Nuno Espirito Santo, who had taken over from Graham Potter in September, could not lift the club clear of the bottom three, and West Ham went into the final day needing to beat Leeds United while hoping Tottenham lost to Everton . They did their part with a 3-0 win at home, but Tottenham's 1-0 win over Everton sent West Ham down anyway. They finished 18th with 39 points, alongside Wolves and Burnley in the drop to the Championship.
The financial context adds urgency to any sale. West Ham posted a £104.2m loss in their last published accounts, with turnover down £42.1m after a lower league finish, fewer live television games and no European football. The club's own filings warned of a potential liquidity shortfall this summer and flagged that further player trading would be required to service around £110m owed to other clubs in transfer installments. A fee approaching £60m for Summerville goes a long way toward closing that gap.

The Business Behind the Sale
Should the deal complete, Summerville will rank as the third-highest sale in West Ham's history, behind only Declan Rice 's move to Arsenal and Mateus Fernandes 's £85m switch to Tottenham earlier in the window. Between Fernandes and Summerville alone, West Ham stand to raise more than £150m this summer.
The rest of the club's business has been comparatively modest. Keiber Lamadrid has arrived from Deportivo La Guaira for an undisclosed fee, while Krisztian Hegyi departed for Sparta Prague and Callum Wilson left for Brentford on a free transfer once his contract expired. Jarrod Bowen , by contrast, has already committed his future to the club, telling Sky Sports his priority is "bringing this club back into the Premier League where we belong."
Bowen underlined that stance by signing a revised contract this summer rather than pushing for an exit, even with reported interest from Aston Villa, Everton, Chelsea , Liverpool and Manchester United. The terms do not extend his existing deal, which runs to 2030, but are understood to include a bonus clause tied to promotion and a release clause that would apply if West Ham fail to win an immediate return to the Premier League.

Al Hilal, for their part, are not finished moving. Sky Sports News understands the Saudi club is already exploring alternative targets in case any part of the Summerville deal stalls, with Norway 's World Cup forwards Antonio Nusa of RB Leipzig and Andreas Schjelderup of Benfica among the names under consideration. Both players were part of a Norway side that reached the quarter-finals against England this summer, with Schjelderup setting up two goals for Erling Haaland off the bench in a last-16 win over Brazil .
Saudi Arabia 's Pull Persists
The move continues a pattern that stretches back to 2023, when Al Hilal signed Ruben Neves from Wolves for a reported $60m and added Kalidou Koulibaly from Chelsea for around £17m in the same window, part of a wider Saudi Pro League push to recruit directly from Europe's biggest leagues. Simone Inzaghi has been in charge in Riyadh after leaving Inter Milan , giving the club a coach with recent Champions League final experience to sell alongside the wages on offer.
Summerville would not be short of company from Europe's traditional powers. Al Hilal's current squad already includes Portugal full back Joao Cancelo , former AC Milan left back Theo Hernandez , Serbia goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic and Koulibaly himself, giving Inzaghi a dressing room stocked with players who have competed at the top of the Premier League, Serie A and LaLiga in the last two years.

Continental success has proven elusive lately for the Saudi club. Al Hilal reached the last 16 of this season's AFC Champions League Elite before losing to Qatar 's Al Sadd on penalties, with domestic rivals Al-Ahli going on to lift the trophy after beating Japan's Machida Zelvia in the final. Signing a World Cup performer like Summerville fits a broader push to close that gap and return Al Hilal to the top of Asian and Gulf football.
Barring a late twist, Summerville is expected to complete his move within days, in time to feature for Al Hilal in the second half of their Saudi Pro League season. For West Ham, the sale brings a difficult Premier League campaign to a close and hands the club fresh resources to work with as it builds for an immediate promotion push. For Summerville, it means a significant pay rise and a return to competing for silverware, just not in the league he arrived in England to conquer.
