Brentford thought they could sneak in with a lowball offer. West Ham United had other ideas.
According to reports originating from talkSPORT, the Bees made a cheeky approach for Senegal ese left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf . The response from East London? A firm, swift slam of the door. West Ham made it crystal clear that the 21-year-old is nowhere near the transfer list and remains a cornerstone of Nuno Espírito Santo's plans for the 2026/27 campaign.
Brentford's opening pitch was nowhere near the ballpark. Not even close. West Ham cut off talks entirely before the conversation could even warm up. When the Hammers shelled out somewhere between £19 million and £22 million to snatch Diouf from Slavia Prague, a few eyebrows were raised. Not anymore. He took to the Premier League instantly.
Looking at his maiden year in England , the lad was practically indispensable. He clocked 32 total league appearances and started 30 of them. Along the way, he chipped in with five assists and 25 chance-creating passes from deep, while whipping 116 crosses into the box and keeping a clean 79% pass accuracy over 2,711 minutes. Off the ball, he racked up 183 clearances, won 20 tackles, grabbed 15 interceptions, and helped secure seven clean sheets. That isn't just decent output. For a young full-back finding his feet in the toughest league on earth, it's outstanding.
It wasn't just domestic football on his plate either. Diouf spent his summer representing Senegal at both the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring three times as his country scrapped their way into the Round of 32.
That kind of tournament exposure changes things. It inflates a player's standing, adds polish to their game, and quite frankly, throws a couple extra million onto their price tag. Brentford's recruitment team ought to have known that.

The Bees are usually sharp in the market. They rarely waste time swinging blindly. Yet their opening offer, likely sitting somewhere around a stingy £15 million to £18 million, was almost insulting. Why on earth would West Ham take a loss on a 21-year-old talent who just turned in a stellar debut year? It makes zero financial sense. None at all.
West Ham endured a messy, exhausting season as a collective unit, but Diouf was one of the few real bright spots. He gave them an attacking outlet down the left channel that simply isn't present anywhere else in the squad. 25 chance-creating passes from a defensive role put several full-time Premier League wingers to shame last term. He's physical, sharp on the ball, and still has massive room to grow.
Nuno runs a rigid, demanding setup. He asks his full-backs to engine up and down the pitch, providing width while maintaining defensive discipline. Diouf fits that brief. Flogging him on the cheap would leave a massive hole in the starting eleven. Good luck trying to replace a player of his profile in today's market with under £20 million in the bank. You simply won't find one.
West Ham made the only sensible move available to them by locking the gates. Brentford desperately need to fix their left flank before the deadline, but they'll have to go knock on somebody else's door.
