Where Does New Steelers DT Sebastian Joseph-Day Fit In?
PITTSBURGH —The Pittsburgh Steelers have a diverse defensive line in terms of age. Stalwart Cam Heyward will be 37 by the start of next season. Derrick Harmon , last year’s first-round draft pick, will be 23. Keeanu Benton and Harmon’s draftmate, Yahya Black , also plug up the front.
Free-agent addition Sebastian Joseph-Day is joining the fold, as well. The soon-to-be-31-year-old believes he can contribute wherever he’s needed.
“I think, honestly, it’s me not boxing myself in,” Joseph-Day said Monday during a press conference at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. “From the start, the beginning of my career, I played a lot of nose next to Aaron Donald , then when I left the Rams, we kinda had a need. We had one of our D-tackles that they signed get hurt, so they were like, ‘Hey, can you play this three?’ I was like, ‘Whatever the team needs me to do.’ And I did it, and I just didn’t box myself in.
“Whenever I went to Tennessee, there was (T’Vondre) Sweat. Sweat is like 360 pounds, he’s a big man. So obviously he couldn’t play four or five, so it was a no-brainer. Jeff (Simmons) was a three, and I was like, ‘I’ll play the five. I’ll play the six. I’ll play the four.’ … Just being (able) to adapt and take pride in being that guy to whatever you need me to do, I’ll be that (Swiss Army) knife.”
Joseph-Day has spent time with the Los Angeles Rams (2019-21), Los Angeles Chargers (2022-23), San Francisco 49ers (2023) and Tennessee Titans (2024-25).
