- Where Does Tylor Megill Fit On The Mets?

Tylor Megill will enter his 6th MLB season with the New York Mets next season. He has spent his entire career in Queens. Megill will be coming off Tommy John surgery that made him miss all of 2026. The thing with Megill is, he doesn't seem to have a spot on the team next season. The Mets have a plethora of young guns who have made a case for themselves to be on the roster next season. As of right now, Megill seems like the odd man out. So the question is, where does Megill fit in the Mets' plans for 2027?
Megill will be turning 32 next season when he comes back from Tommy John surgery. After not pitching for over a year, it will be interesting to see how he comes back from that injury. In Megill's MLB career so far, he has been very mediocre. He holds a lifetime record of 26-26 with a 4.46 ERA. It is not the most enticing stats when it comes to Megill. He has never seemed to put together full seasons of success.

It seems as if April is always his best month. In his career, in the month of April, Megill has a 10-4 record with a 2.45 ERA and 89 strikeouts through 88 innings. However, after that, he comes back down to earth and never reaches the spark he had in the first month of the season. It is very hard to imagine that Megill comes back into the rotation right away, if at all. So, the only realistic spot for him would be in the bullpen . Sadly, he hasn't had much success as a reliever.
In his small sample size out of the Mets' bullpen, Megill has appeared in seven games and has a 5.63 ERA through eight innings pitched. Megill doesn't seem to have much luck whether out of the bullpen or as a starter. It will be hard for him to earn a spot this spring with the team. He is going to need an exceptional spring to show he can be of value to the team. As of right now, though, with the rise of guys like Nolan McLean , Zac Thornton , and Christian Scott , the bullpen seems like the best bet for Megill to work his way back into the rotation for the Mets.
If Tylor Megill were to come back and have a slow or disappointing Spring, it would seem that he could be optioned to the minors to start the season. Another option, if the Mets decide they've seen enough, would be to either trade him or DFA him if they please. This 2027 season will be a huge make or break season for Megill, and the team can use all the help they can get pitching-wise and Megill could be a help if he comes back at 100%. Just the opportunity to have an extra pitcher would be helping to deepen the Mets pitching core.
It seems as if whatever Tylor Megill does this season, it is most likely his last shot to prove something to the Mets. After the 2027 season, Megill will be a free agent. He will need to prove himself to the Mets' brass , otherwise he may find himself somewhere else by the deadline or in the offseason after the 2027 season. Let's see what Tylor Megill can prove in this upcoming season and hopefully he can be a piece of the Mets pitching rotation.
