Munetaka Murakami suffered a leg injury as he had to leave Friday's game between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers .
Murakami is going through the rookie campaign of his career in the majors. He stands out as an active hitter in Chicago's offense, helping the squad have a solid start to the season.
However, Murakami had unpleasant news after picking up a hamstring injury in the third inning. He landed a hit on the ball as he made his way to first base. While he was successful at reaching the base, he immediately grabbed his right hamstring as the team took him out of the game. Chicago later confirmed that the first baseman is going through right hamstring tightness , per MLB insider Bob Nightengale.
" Chicago White Sox rookie sensation Munetaka Murakami, who has hit 20 homers, left the game with right hamstring tightness. The White Sox say he'll undergo further examination to determine the severity of the injury," Nightengale wrote.
How White Sox played against Tigers despite Munetaka Murakami's injury
Despite missing Munetaka Murakami's presence at first base, the White Sox stepped up in his absence by taking down the Tigers 4-3 after 10 innings.
Detroit had a 2-1 lead after three innings and held it until Chicago evened things up in the ninth frame. This prompted extra innings, as the White Sox used a two-run homer from Miguel Vargas to walk off with the victory.
Chicago improved to a 30-27 record on the season, holding the second spot in the AL Central Division standings. They are above the Minnesota Twins and the Kansas City Royals while trailing the Cleveland Guardians .
Having three straight wins to their name, the White Sox will look to extend it in their second game of three against the Tigers. Game 2 takes place on May 30 at 2:10 p.m. ET.
