The Chicago White Sox seem to have found a gold mine in hard-hitting slugger Munetaka Murakami . Murakami is in his rookie Major League Baseball season, and already making his mark. It appears that Chicago is already preparing to enter contract extension talks with the infielder.
One MLB insider feels Murakami may enter those talks with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. In December 2025, Murakami signed a two-year deal worth $34 million.
“I’m sure he was disappointed in the amount of money he got…..when he hit free agency, people were talking about over 100 million dollars and I think they were stunned to see that nobody in the industry thought he would be that superstar player,” USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale said on Foul Territory.
Nightengale believes the team will work this offseason to keep Murakami around longer. The insider adds there’s no guarantee that he will stay past his current contract.
“On the flip end, why not let thirty teams bid on me and see what I can get?” Nightengale added about possible contract negotiations between Murakami and Chicago.
Murakami is going for MLB history on Wednesday, as he hopes to hit a home run in his fifth consecutive game. He has nine on the season, and 17 RBIs already for a rebuilding Chicago team.
The slugger is proving in more ways than one that he is a special player .
“ Munetaka Murakami has 30 combined HR and BB through his first 23 games in MLB,” the X account OptaSTATS reported. “That is three games fewer than any other player to debut in the live-ball era (since 1920) has needed to reach that total (Alvin Davis – 26).”
The White Sox are 9-14 on the year. Chicago plays the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday.
