After a disappointing regression in 2025, the Washington Commanders are looking to have a breakout 2026 season with their new offensive coordinator, David Blough. A key element of this resurgence will be star wide receiver Terry McLaurin , who is thrilled about Blough's commitment to give him ten targets per game. In an interview with JP Finlay, McLaurin revealed that Blough texted him this promise back in February and has kept his word ever since. This plan sets McLaurin up to manage heavy coverage and maximize offensive opportunities alongside franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Although he entered the league as an established veteran, the Pro Bowl wideout is now the oldest player on ESPN's list of top breakout candidates for the 2026 season at nearly 31 years old. With five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons from 2020 to 2024 demonstrating his consistent talent, ESPN believes he is poised to rise beyond the label of an average No. 1 option by achieving a career-high 100 receptions.
A lengthy contract dispute and a recurring quad injury hindered McLaurin's lackluster performance in 2025. However, Blough's innovative offensive scheme promises a significant upgrade over Kliff Kingsbury's more rigid system. Last year, McLaurin ranked seventh in yards per route at 2.56, but was 18th in targets per route and placed 100th in the NFL, with only 16.8% of his yards coming after the catch. By implementing pre-snap motions, slot alignments, and a focus on heavy targets during third downs, similar to the strategies used for Amon-Ra St. Brown, Blough can help McLaurin achieve the best touchdown and yardage numbers of his career.

This change in scheme seems to be progressing well throughout the roster. In a conversation with NFL Network's Mike Garafolo during mandatory minicamp, McLaurin praised Jayden Daniels for mastering the communication of the new offense with professionalism. He noted that the young quarterback is a remarkably quick learner and is already comfortable executing the modified scheme.
