Justin Herbert has been considered one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL since his arrival in 2020. However, the Los Angeles Chargers have been unable to advance past the Wild Card Round during his tenure.
The Chargers will once again enter 2026 with lofty expectations. But Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated thinks things will be different this time around . He is predicting Herbert going on an MVP-like run and Los Angeles having one of the best offenses in the league.
"I do believe in McDaniel, and think the union with Jim Harbaugh will be a good one. And I think it'll lead to Justin Herbert making a run at MVP in his seventh season," Breer wrote. "So I think it's fair to hope for 25 points per game this year, which would put them on the fringe of the top 10 in scoring, and represent a pretty big uptick in production. And as part of that, I'd bet they have one of the NFL's most effective and explosive run games."
The Chargers have made numerous changes to their offense throughout the offseason. Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was brought in as offensive coordinator. Tight end David Njoku joined the passing attack . Furthermore, both offensive tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater should be returning from injury.
Ultimately, Herbert will need to use these new weapons to his advantage. He'll need to limit the interceptions after throwing 13 in 2025. But the QB still earned his second Pro Bowl nomination by completing 66.4 percent of his passes for 3,727 yards and 26 touchdowns.
All eyes will once again be on Herbert when the Chargers play in 2026. Perhaps this is the year he puts it all together towards an MVP campaign.
