Just when many thought the Auburn Tigers ' 2026 transfer portal saga had come to a close, Alex Golesh and company added wide receiver Tray Taylor to their roster less than three weeks before they were set to open the season. However, Golesh shared in a recent press conference that Taylor may not be able to suit up for the Tigers after all.
"Right now, Tray is eligible to practice," Golesh said. "We're still waiting, and if you can keep up with what's going on, God bless you. But right now, from our compliance, he's eligible to practice and not eligible to compete yet, as the back-and-forth of the TROs and the NCAA go, so he's practicing with us."
Taylor, who played four collegiate seasons between junior college, Coastal Carolina and Troy, entered the transfer portal back in January and pursued an extra year of eligibility in court due to his time spent in junior college. He committed to the Tigers on August 17 and has been practicing on the Plains ever since.
A true peedster, Taylor stands at 5-foot-6 and 150 pounds according to Auburn's official roster and went viral when he committed to the Tigers due to his stature, but Golesh and company clearly see something in him, even teasing that he may find some use as a kick returner for the Tigers, pending his cleared eligibility.
The Tigers still have plenty of other receiver options available even if Taylor cannot play this season, though their receiver room will still be a shell of what it was this time last season. Gone are the days of Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons, Eric Singleton and even Perry Thompson, as they all departed alongside Hugh Freeze when he was fired in late 2025.
However, Golesh has rebuilt the room quite well, albeit with quite a few USF transfers, and Golesh even said that the team has six solid receiving options in the same press conference. As it stands, the Tigers are set to lean on Keshaun Singleton, Chas Nimrod, Jeremiah Koger and a host of others.
If the passing game struggles, the Tigers also have one of the strongest rushing attacks in the game, led by Jeremiah Cobb, Bryson Washington, Omar Mabson and, of course, elite dual-threat quarterback Byrum Brown.
Alex Golesh has been clear that this year is to be a foundational year, but the fans have placed another expectation on him: make a bowl game, something Hugh Freeze struggled immensely to do throughout his tenure with the Tigers. If Taylor is healthy and able to join Auburn's group of receivers, that effort could get just that much easier.
