Why the Broncos have not yet officially cut LB Dre Greenlaw

News broke on Monday afternoon that the Denver Broncos plan to release linebacker Dre Greenlaw after re-signing both Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad .

But when the NFL's transaction wire was published on Tuesday, Greenlaw was not on it , signaling that he has not yet been officially released. So, what's up? Is a trade in the works? No, nobody's trading for that contract.

Instead, the Broncos plan to release Greenlaw with a post-June 1 designation after the NFL's new league year begins on March 11, according to the Denver Gazette 's Chris Tomasson . By designating it as a post-June 1 transaction, Denver can spread the dead money hit over two years, creating more salary cap space in 2026.

If he was cut today, the team's salary cap savings would be just over $6 million, according to OverTheCap.com . Once he's cut tomorrow, Greenlaw's departure will save the team just over $8 million in 2026. The veteran linebacker will leave behind dead money cap hits of $2.166 million in each of the next two seasons, but being free of his contract will give the team a net cap savings of $11 million in 2027.

With those savings, it's not surprising that the Broncos have opted to cut the linebacker who missed nine games in 2025. Singleton and Strnad are poised to remain the starters in 2026, and Denver will look to add more depth.
