- Why Dallas Cowboys CB Is on the Hot Seat
DaRon Bland is facing mounting pressure to improve after a difficult start to the 2026 NFL season raised concerns about his role in the Dallas Cowboys' secondary. The cornerback's recent struggles have put his performance under scrutiny as Dallas searches for answers to its defensive problems.
Bland entered the season with expectations shaped by his ability to make plays in coverage and create turnovers. However, his performances through the opening weeks have left room for criticism, particularly as opposing offenses continue to find opportunities against the Cowboys' defensive backs. For a team hoping to remain competitive in the NFC, inconsistent coverage from a key cornerback can quickly become a costly weakness.

The concerns surrounding Bland extend beyond individual statistics. Cornerbacks are often judged by their ability to limit receivers, maintain positioning and prevent explosive plays, even when the ball does not come their way. When those responsibilities are not consistently fulfilled, opposing quarterbacks can exploit the matchup and force defensive coordinators to reconsider their personnel decisions.

Dallas also faces pressure to improve its overall defensive performance, making every position battle more consequential. If Bland cannot regain his form, the coaching staff may consider adjusting his workload or giving other defensive backs more opportunities. Such a move would not necessarily signal the end of his tenure with the team, but it would reflect the urgency to find a more reliable combination in coverage.
NFL Analysis Places Dallas Cowboys' Daron Bland on Hot Seat

Bland's performance this season has placed him in an uncertain position in Dallas. This is detailed more in an analysis by Bill Barnwell for ESPN.
Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have had reasons to give Bland a long leash. Despite missing most of the 2024 season with a foot injury, the Cowboys gave their young corner a four-year, $90 million extension before the 2025 season. Bland missed more time last year before pronouncing himself to be all the way back this season … but he has looked overmatched in coverage. Tez Johnson's 64-yard catch against the Cowboys in primetime last week came on a play where Bland was badly juked and fell to the ground like he was the child in one of those "dad crosses over baby" videos.
The situation creates an important challenge for Bland as the season progresses. He must demonstrate better awareness, tighter coverage and greater consistency against opposing receivers to rebuild confidence in his performance. Improved communication with teammates and more disciplined execution could help reduce the mistakes that have contributed to concerns about his effectiveness.

Bland still has an opportunity to change the narrative surrounding his season, but the margin for error is narrowing as Dallas looks to stabilize its defense. Stronger performances in upcoming games could reaffirm his value and ease questions about his place in the lineup. If the struggles continue, however, the Cowboys may have to explore alternative options to improve a secondary that cannot afford repeated breakdowns against the NFL's most productive passing attacks.
