Smith fell out of favor fast with Michigan State and its fans, as the Spartans were uncompetitive against ranked teams. The Spartans were 0-6 against ranked opponents under Smith, and outscored by 139 points in those games.
He went 5-7 in 2024 — not including the five vacated wins — and 4-8 in 2024 to finish his overall tenure with a 9-15 record. He failed to reach a bowl game in either of his campaigns.
Smith faced some challenges at the school, though, as Michigan State was being investigated due to recruiting violations that occurred under Tucker which led to the program vacating 14 wins from 2022-24. The NCAA found the Spartans allowed players who were ineligible to participate in games.
