BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football running back Khobie Martin suffered an apparent upper body injury in the first quarter of the season opener against North Texas on Saturday. The Fox broadcast confirmed at the start of the third quarter that Martin would miss the rest of the game.
After a 52-16 win over the Mean Green , IU coach Curt Cignetti told reporters that Martin, "might be out a little while," but didn't offer any sort of exact timeline.
Martin, a third-year running back out of Fishers, entered the year as part of a trio of backs expected to split up the majority of the team's reps in the backfield. He didn't get a single carry with him going out in the opening minutes.
Last year, Martin showed flashes of his impressive athleticism while helping the Hoosiers close out a series of lopsided wins. He finished the season with 505 yards (6.5 yards per carry) with six TDs and seven runs of 20-plus yards.
"Man, I love Khobie," Indiana left tackle Carter Smith said ahead of the opener. "He's really grown a lot as a leader. He used to be when he first got here in '24, a young cat, it seemed he definitely had a lot of potential, and he's really lived up to it nowadays. I can't wait to see what he does on Saturdays."
Indiana 's backfield had modest numbers, but Turbo Richard and Lee Beebe Jr. each set up touchdown drives with long kickoff returns in the first half.
