- Why Haaland's Man Utd Winner Should Never Have Stood, Officials Stood Down

Erling Haaland 's 60th-minute winner in Sunday's Manchester derby was allowed to stand after VAR ruled him onside, but refereeing body Pro Ref admitted the next day that the goal should have been disallowed for an entirely different reason.
-
Manchester City teammate Enzo Fernandez was standing in an offside position and interfered with play as he dived for the ball just before it reached Haaland, a factor the video assistant referee never applied to the decision.

VAR Matt Donohue and assistant VAR Blake Antrobus were both left out of the following weekend's Premier League fixtures after Pro Ref confirmed the "error of judgement" that decided the game.
How a Question About a Missed Touch Cost Manchester United the Derby
Manchester City had been down to 10 men for more than half an hour when Erling Haaland turned in the winner at Old Trafford. The linesman's flag went up straight away, ruling him offside. VAR pulled the decision back, waved play on, and Manchester United lost the derby 1-0. A day later, Pro Ref admitted the goal should never have counted, just not for the reason anyone flagged on the pitch.

City had gone down to 10 men early on when Phil Foden was sent off for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes , a decision that left Enzo Maresca's side facing the closing stages of the derby a man light. That made the manner of the winner sting more for United, who had spent the last half hour of normal time believing they had contained City's extra man disadvantage, only for the goal that decided the game to arrive through an error that had nothing to do with the sending-off.
Josko Gvardiol 's cross found Haaland at the back post, and replays showed United defender Patrick Dorgu had played him onside. On that specific question, the video assistant referee got the call right. Haaland was not offside. The problem was a Manchester City player standing right next to him.
The Goal That Should Have Been Ruled Out for the Wrong Reason
Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position six yards from goal, diving for the same ball ahead of Haaland. Pro Ref's own statement confirmed Fernandez was correctly judged offside. What the officials failed to do was connect that offside position to the goal itself. "On this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position," Pro Ref said, acknowledging "an error of judgement" in a statement issued on Sunday night.

The law does not require Fernandez to have touched the ball for the offside to count against City. A player in an offside position only needs to interfere with an opponent's ability to play the ball, and replays showed United goalkeeper Senne Lammens reacted to Fernandez by raising his arms and shifting his balance in expectation of a header that never came. Defender Lisandro Martinez had already adjusted his own position to deal with Fernandez before Haaland struck. Both United players were affected by a Haaland teammate who never touched the ball at all.
Why the VAR Fixated on the Wrong Question
The likeliest explanation, based on the Premier League's own mid-match statement and Sky Sports' broadcast footage, is that the video assistant referee became fixed on whether Fernandez had actually touched the ball, rather than whether his position had affected the players around him. The Premier League's live match centre account posted in the middle of the game that "the VAR also deemed that while in an offside position, Fernandez didn't play the ball," treating the missed touch as if it settled the matter. It does not. Offside law asks whether a player in an offside position affects play, regardless of whether the ball brushes his boot.
The on-field decision had been given against Haaland rather than against Fernandez, so Pro Ref said the correct process required referee Michael Oliver to be sent to the pitchside monitor for an on-field review, where he would have made his own judgement on whether Fernandez affected the passage of play. That review never happened. The goal stood on the strength of the VAR's television reading alone.

"We Have to Go Home With This Injustice"
Martinez did not hide his anger afterward. "I think Fernandez was offside. What I can't understand is the rules," he told Sky Sports. "He was there! I went to him because he was in front of me. That's why Haaland was free at the back. I want to be calm but it is so hard. Five or six people doing this kind of mistake in the Premier League is unacceptable. We have to go home with this injustice."
Michael Carrick called the decision "staggering" and the process behind it "worrying" in his own post-match reaction, while City manager Enzo Maresca conceded after the game that his side had benefited from the numerical disadvantage forcing United into more open, transition-heavy football that suited Haaland's run.
Pundits Call the Explanation a Nonsense
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said the Premier League's own wording made an apology inevitable. "There is no doubt that Enzo is attempting to play the ball and putting Lisandro Martinez off," he said on his podcast. "It's a really strange one. They'll recognise they got that wrong." He added that the Match Centre statement had made things worse rather than better: "I think they are ignoring the rule. They are digging themselves a bigger hole. I'm really surprised they put that out. They will have to retract that."

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards was blunter. "One hundred per cent he is," he said when asked whether Fernandez was clearly attempting to play the ball. "I think it's been a bad day for referees and VAR. They got the Phil Foden decision wrong, and they got this decision wrong. How you can not say Enzo Fernandez is challenging for the ball, of course he is. I've been in that position as a defender where any slight movement can make the difference for going for the ball or not, so of course it affects him. I just think they've got it so wrong."
Roy Keane placed the blame on the process rather than on United's defending. "Fernandez is interfering with play," he said. "Basically, United have been punished for holding a good line. When you are in that position, you are impacting the game. You're in the middle of the box, you're going for the ball. Their line is good. Fernandez is offside, and he goes to play the ball, so United are getting punished for good defending." Maresca offered the only public dissent, telling reporters: "I think Erling was onside and Enzo doesn't interfere with the action."
Two Officials Stood Down, One Apology
Pro Ref's response was to leave Donohue and Antrobus out of any fixture the following weekend, and Sky Sports News reported that United received a direct apology over the error. Donohue has spent most of his Premier League career in the VAR booth rather than out on the pitch as the man in the middle, so Sunday's call rested on his reading of a screen rather than a live view of the incident.

The episode adds to a pattern that has followed the Premier League's semi-automated offside system this season, which now generates a kick-point graphic for broadcasters rather than the hand-drawn lines viewers grew used to under the old process. The technology can tell officials exactly where a player's foot was. It cannot decide, on its own, whether a teammate standing nearby changed the outcome, and Sunday's derby showed how much still rests on a human being asking the right question at the right moment.
Sunday's derby was not an isolated case that weekend. Arsenal were awarded a penalty in their 2-0 win over Sunderland after Ezri Konsa was penalised for wrestling Dan Ballard to the ground, a decision VAR confirmed, and replays later showed Ballard pulling Konsa down at the same time, leaving Mikel Arteta furious afterward. Manchester United had already been on the sharp end of a separate VAR call earlier in the season, when Harry Maguire 's goal in a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town was allowed to stand after the ball came off his arm on the way in. Howard Webb, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited's chief refereeing officer, personally reviewed the weekend's incidents alongside his management team before Pro Ref's statement on Donohue and Antrobus went out.
What Should Change
Pro Ref's own explanation points to the fix. Any goal that follows a marginal offside call, in either direction, ought to trigger an on-field review by the referee whenever a second player was standing near the play in an offside position, regardless of which player the on-field flag was originally raised against. The process treated Haaland's offside check as the only question worth answering, and that single gap produced Sunday's failure. Fernandez's position was noticed, then dismissed on a technicality about a touch that the law does not require. Until that gap in the process closes, an admission and a weekend off for two officials will keep arriving a day too late for whichever team just lost.
