Liverpool may be forced to move on Calvin Ramsay this summer, but not necessarily due to performances or finances, but instead due to FA rules.
Why Hasn't Calvin Ramsay Worked Out At LFC?
Calvin Ramsay was signed by LFC back in 2022, costing Liverpool an initial £4.2 million from Scottish side Aberdeen, and signed a 5 year deal at the club. The long term hope for Ramsay was that, given he signed aged 19, he would become a homegrown player for the Reds, allowing him to become a useful squad option for the years to come.

But he struggled to break into Jurgen Klopp's first XI and then suffered an injury that would rule him out for the majority of the 2022/23 season, after only making two appearances for the club.

Ramsay would then make a loan move out to Championship side Preston North End for the 2023/24 season, but he again struggled for game time and was recalled by LFC in January, following just two appearances.
He would then immediately join Bolton Wanderers in League One, with the hope that he would have a similar amount of success at Bolton as his fellow Liverpool defender Conor Bradley, but this failed to be the case and he played just 69 minutes across three games for Bolton.

The Scottish full back then faced the same issues the following season as he had a couple of unsuccessful loans at both Wigan Athletic and Kilmarnock. So, after a number of years of not playing a consistent amount of football wherever he went, it led to him dropping down the order at LFC and almost becoming the forgotten man on Merseyside.
A Promising Pre-Season From Calvin Ramsay?
However, going into this season, Ramsay was included in the LFC pre-season side that travelled over to the US and he featured in all three games for the Reds.

And while his performances were not breathtaking, he showed himself to be a steady operator for Liverpool against Premier League sides such as Sunderland and Leeds United.

But despite Ramsay looking as through he could be a sensible squad option for LFC going into this season, it seems unlikely that he will be able to remain at Anfield this summer.
Why Do Liverpool Need To Possibly Move Calvin Ramsay On This Summer?
Due to lacking senior minutes throughout his time in England, Ramsay does not qualify as a homegrown player, meaning he takes up one of the valuable non-homegrown player slots at the club.
Furthermore, if Liverpool manage to complete the signing of long term target Bradley Barcola this summer, someone in the squad will need to be moved on in order to allow the club to register Barcola.

Now there have been a number of players that have been linked with moves away this summer, that would open up a non-homegrown slot in the squad. Cody Gakpo is the most high profile possible departure, with the Dutchman continuing to be linked with a move away to Tottenham Hotspur.

Who Is Interested In A Move For Calvin Ramsay?
However, Federico Chiesa and Calvin Ramsay have also been rumoured with summer departures in recent weeks. Calvin Ramsay in particular is said to be of interest to Scottish League side St Mirren on loan, according to Paul Joyce .

If Liverpool were to allow Ramsay to leave the club this summer on loan, the club are likely to try and tie down the Scottish defender on a new deal, in order to not risk losing him on a free transfer next summer when his current deal expires, according to Jack Lusby .
But it is clear that LFC will need to sanction a departure in order to bring in their top target this summer, with Calvin Ramsay being someone near the top of the exit list.
