The Orlando Magic made things interesting in the first round of the playoffs against the No. 1 seed Detroit Pistons , and they had a 3-1 series lead at one point. Before the series, there were a lot of rumblings surrounding the Magic and how some big changes could be on the way, most specifically, moving on from Jamahl Mosley .
With the Magic up 3-1 and a chance to knock off the Pistons, it looked like Mosley's job could have been safe. Unfortunately, they blew that 3-1 lead, including losing a 24-point lead in Game 6, and Mosley was dismissed a day after they lost Game 7.
The next steps for the Magic are to find a new head coach, and though there are several options that may come up, there seems to be just one true option that can work for them, and it's Billy Donovan.
Just a few weeks ago, Donovan stepped down as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls , as they plan on reworking their front office this offseason. There's no doubt that Donovan will have suitors for his services, but the Magic should be the one knocking on his door immediately.
Donovan has shown throughout his NBA coaching career that he can manage teams with multiple stars on the team, and this won't be any different with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner . There have seemed to be times throughout the past few seasons that both players have gotten in each other's way, and they need a system that is going to work for both of them.
The one thing that held the Magic back this season was their three-point shooting, and if Donovan can bring his philosophy to this team, the hope is that it can help improve that area. Another thing they'll need this season is someone who can jumpstart the offense, which means Donovan would have to think about a real point guard who can help the team.
Hopefully, there's no love lost between Donovan and the Magic, as most people remember that he was hired as the team's head coach in 2007. Unfortunately, he walked back the contract offer and returned to Florida, which led the Magic to hire Stan Van Gundy. A lot has changed since then, so this would be a fresh start for Donovan, and he'll be walking into a situation with a lot of talent.
The Magic will definitely have a list of candidates whom they'll consider, but if they want the best option for their team, they'd hire Donovan.
