The Green Bay Packers have made a handful of moves throughout the season in an attempt to fix their woeful offensive line. One of those moves was to add veteran guard Kevin Zeitler; however, the former Pro Bowler has yet to see the field, more than a month after joining the team.
Zeitler's absence has been a mystery to most, as upon his signing on September 30 , the belief was that he'd play almost immediately. On Tuesday, Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich revealed why that wasn't the case.
"When we signed him, he was coming off an injury with his knee. So, it was kind of a question mark. I think it took him a few weeks to get to the point where he's at right now, where he's kind of working his way back into it," Stenavich said via the Packers .
Zeitler never appeared on the Packers injury list, which adds a tiny bit of intrigue to Stenavich's comments. However, whatever was ailing the 36-year-old, it's no longer an issue.
Zeitler is Ready to Play, But Victim of the Numbers Game
Days before signing Zeitler, one of the first offensive linemen added to fix the Packers' mess of an offensive line was Laken Tomlinson . So far, the 34-year-old has been solid, allowing only seven pressures and zero sacks in five games, first filling in at left guard before switching sides in Week 8.
With Tomlinson playing so well in the eyes of the Packers, Zeitler has become a victim of the numbers game.
"What happened was Laken [Tomlinson] came in and really did a tremendous job, just coming in and really helping out our team and helping out our offensive line and really helping us become productive in a lot of senses," Stenavich said. "It just was one of those things where I thought he was going to come in and play, but Laken stepped up and did a nice job. It is what it is right now."
While Zeitler doesn't seem to factor into the Packers' plans right now, Stenavich said they trust him to produce if called upon.
"Would I hesitate to put him in a game? No. I would not. He's ready to play," Stenavich said.
