FOXBOROUGH — Around the holidays, it’s customary for NFL quarterbacks to give their offensive linemen gifts.
Some signal callers opt for watches, wealthier ones may go for cars, and Joe Burrow got authentic fossils for the Bengals.
While Patriots offensive linemen have been tight-lipped about their present from Drake Maye this season, there’s another piece of the offense that felt he was deserving of a gift: Rhamondre Stevenson .
The back has run the ball well and caught passes down the stretch, but he’s also delivered plenty of blitz pick-ups to keep his quarterback upright all season.
“He does it in all three (running back) phases,” Maye said. “I mean, the amount of picked up blocks, he told me that he needs a gift like the o-linemen — and he probably does the way he’s blocked this year. He’s been one of the best in the league. It’s comforting having 38 back there.”
Though Stevenson’s production in the running game has ebbed and flowed, he’s remained Mike Vrabel’s most trusted back in pass protection throughout the season. Even when he struggled with fumbles, Vrabel didn’t hesitate to have Stevenson on the field protecting Maye.
Stevenson hasn’t had any issues with ball security recently however, and he’s been ridiculously productive. The running back had six touchdowns in New England ’s final three games, picking up 334 yards from scrimmage (229 rushing, 104 receiving). Stevenson was named the AFC’s Offensive Player of the Week following a terrific Week 18 performance against the Dolphins.
“I’m so proud of the way he’s bounced back,” Maye said. “Had some things off the field (and) he’s just kept on pushing. He’s been a great teammate. He’s always been a great teammate.”
