- Why R.J. Mickens Could Become a Key Contributor for the Chargers in 2026

Now, the former Clemson standout enters his second season with a full year of experience under his belt and a chance to compete for additional snaps.
One reason Mickens could see a larger role is his versatility. Throughout his college career, he showed the ability to play multiple positions in the secondary, whether that meant lining up as a deep safety or working closer to the line of scrimmage. That flexibility is valuable in Jesse Minter's defense, which asks defensive backs to wear multiple hats depending on the matchup.
The Bolts also prioritize intelligence and communication in the secondary. Those were two traits that helped Mickens stand out during his time at Clemson and continue to be strengths as he develops at the professional level.
With another offseason in Los Angeles , Mickens should be playing at a faster pace and react more instinctively than he did as a rookie. Special teams could remain a large part of his role, but the bigger opportunity may come on defense. Injuries and rotational snaps create opportunities throughout a long season, and players who are prepared often find themselves becoming larger contributors than initially expected heading into the year.

Another factor working in Mickens' favor is the arrival of first-time defensive coordinator and former safety's coach Chris O'Leary. The familiarity with the position could create an opportunity for Mickens to earn a larger role as he enters his second season. O'Leary has built a reputation for developing defensive backs throughout his coaching career, and the Chargers will be looking for young players to step forward as the defense transitions into a new era.
If Mickens can build on the foundation he established as a rookie,Harry How - Getty Images he has the tools to become much more than a depth piece. The Chargers don't need him to become a star overnight, but 2026 could be the year he establishes himself as a consistent contributor in the secondary.
