- Why the Saints’ Signing of Kahlil Saunders Is a Calculated Low-Risk Gamble
The New Orleans Saints made a classic late-summer training camp roster move, officially signing former Kentucky defensive tackle Kahlil Saunders while placing offensive lineman Dillon Radunz on injured reserve. At first glance, swapping an interior offensive tackle depth piece for an undrafted rookie defensive tackle looks like standard August transaction noise. But dig a bit deeper into what Saunders brings to the table, and this signing reveals itself as a sneaky-good, low-risk lottery ticket for a Saints defense that always thrives on defensive line rotation.
The SEC pedigree and athletic baseline
At 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, Saunders doesn't project as a traditional two-gap nose tackle who is going to swallow double teams. Instead, he fits the mold of a penetrating interior lineman, a profile that New Orleans has loved utilizing as an interior disruptor on passing downs.

Saunders was far from a draft-chart darling, going unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft before brief stops in camp, signing and being released by the Miami Dolphins . But his profile is intriguing. Coming out of Kentucky, Saunders logged 51 career games in the SEC, culminating in a 2025 senior campaign where he started 12 games and showed real flashes of disruption (29 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, two sacks, and four QB hurries). More importantly, his pre-draft workout profile posted a Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 8.43 out of 10, showcasing explosive quickness and elite mobility for a player his size.
In short: the raw clay is there. He isn't a project starting from square one; he's an SEC-tested athlete with 50+ college appearances who was simply caught in the numbers game in Miami.
Why the fit makes sense for New Orleans
New Orleans' defensive philosophy under Dennis Allen's system has long relied on keeping defensive linemen fresh through continuous rotation. They don't just ask their starters to play 80% of snaps; they actively hunt for sub-package pass rushers who can pin their ears back on 3rd-and-6.

Saunders' versatility across the front allows defensive coordinator Joe Woods to move him around, whether lining up as a 3-technique or kicking out slightly wider in lighter fronts. With the Saints opening their preseason schedule against the Jacksonville Jaguars , Saunders gets thrust straight into live-action reps. Unlike a developmental project who needs weeks just to digest the playbook, a five-year SEC veteran can step onto the field almost immediately and let his instincts take over.
The reality check
Is Kahlil Saunders going to step in and remake the Saints' interior defense overnight? Of course not. He faces a steep battle just to survive the cut down to the 53-man roster, competing against established veterans and draft picks who hold higher financial guarantees.
However, NFL August roster moves aren't about finding immediate Pro Bowlers; they are about finding traits. Saunders brings power-five experience, an elite athletic profile, and legitimate interior pass-rush flashes.

For a franchise that has consistently turned under-the-radar defensive line prospects into productive rotational pieces, signing Saunders isn't just filling a empty spot, it's a smart, zero-risk swing on SEC traits that might just pay off on Sunday afternoons.
