- Why the White Sox Traded Pitching Prospect Mason Adams
One of the trades made by the Chicago White Sox on deadline day brought outfielder Brenton Doyle to the South Side .
Doyle, 28, is a two-time Gold Glove Award winner with the Colorado Rockies . Back in 2024, he also hit 23 home runs, stole 30 bases, and posted a .764 OPS.

It's intriguing depth for Chicago and a swing on upside that also comes with club control. Doyle has an opportunity to contribute to the 2026 White Sox as well, depending on what happens in the hours leading up to the deadline.
The real sticking point for many White Sox fans was the return package that went back to the Rockies. It was headlined by right-handed pitcher Mason Adams , the No. 8 prospect in Chicago's farm system, according to MLB Pipeline.
Adams was on the cusp of making his major league debut in 2025 before undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing the entire season. He began rehabbing in 2026 and eventually returned to the mound in Triple-A Charlotte, posting a 3.86 ERA over 49 total minor league innings.
He was one of Chicago's highest-rated pitching prospects, and he seemed to be on the verge of making his MLB debut. The White Sox had even considered using Adams out of the bullpen at some point this season. So why would they trade him for a depth outfielder?

The answer lies in that very plan. The White Sox have become hyper-aware that Adams comes with some reliever risk. In fact, a move to the bullpen is looking more likely than not.
Adams has been hit hard in the minor leagues this season, even if his traditional numbers aren't inflated. Among Triple-A pitchers, he ranks below average in hard-hit rate, expected batting average against, expected slugging percentage against, and whiff rate. For a 26-year-old pitcher without loud stuff, it becomes very difficult to see where he fits with the White Sox in both the short and long term.
Not to mention the 40-man roster mechanics that could be at play here. Adams will once again be Rule 5 eligible at the end of this season. If Chicago didn't see a path to adding him to the 40-man or active roster before the end of the year, there's a chance the organization would lose him to the Rule 5 regardless. Instead, it made sense to cash in on his value with an organization desperate for young pitching.
Most of Adams' arsenal grades out well below average, with his four-seam fastball being his only above-average pitch at 103, according to Prospects Savant's Stuff+ metric . His spin rates are merely average.

To put it plainly, the White Sox hadn't been overly impressed by what Adams showed on the mound in 2026. The stuff, the execution, all of it. There also wasn't an intuitive spot for him on the big league roster, either in the rotation or the bullpen, in the short term.
It simply made Adams more expendable.
Adams should now have an opportunity to be fast-tracked to the big leagues with Colorado, while the White Sox once again bet on their player development staff and its belief that it can unlock some of the offensive potential Brenton Doyle showed in 2024.
