The Minnesota Wild will now head into the offseason after a solid run in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but coming up short against the Colorado Avalanche in the second round. The Wild dealt with some injuries during their run, with one of them being to Filip Gustavsson.
He'll be in recovery mode for the offseason, as he's set to have hip surgery , according to Michael Russo of The Athletic.
"Gustavsson having offseason hip surgery, Guerin doesn't know yet if he'll be ready for start of season," Russo wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The hope is that Gustavsson is able to suit up when next season starts, but it may all depend on how his recovery goes for the coming months. This season, he had a 2.69 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage over 50 games. He only started in one game during the playoffs, where he allowed four goals on 22 shots in Game 2 against the Avalanche.
It wouldn't be a surprise if the Wild went out during the offseason to find some depth in place of Gustavsson for the time being. Jesper Wallstedt took over the goaltending duties toward the end of the season and into the postseason, and he seemed to play well.
Wallstedt was in trade rumors as he's entering the final year of his contract, and after the season ended, he opened up about the rumors.
"I don't think you're ever safe, but I hope I made a good impression," Wallstedt said via Russo on X.
With Gustavsson's health in doubt to start next season, there is a good chance they may hang on to Wallstedt, and he showed enough to be a key part of the team at the net.
