After a sluggish first period, the Minnesota Wild put the pedal to the metal by turning a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday night. It was Minnesota's home opener at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, where a sold-out crowd of 19,185 fans watched the Wild move to 2-0.
Boston controlled the pace of play for most of the first period and carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Things changed in the second period as the Wild began to dominate.
Kirill Kaprizov's power-play goal at 6:11 of the second period tied the game. The Wild star was parked near the front of the net and buried a one-timer from Maxim Shabanov to tie the game.
Then, in the final seconds of another power play, Quinn Hughes fired a shot through traffic to beat Michael DiPietro for his first goal of the season.
Hughes also got an assist—his 50th in 50 games since being traded to the Wild last December. He's the fastest player to 50 assists in Wild history.
Jared Spurgeon boosted the lead to 3-1 at 3:24 of the third period, and Kaprizov's empty-net goal with 1:01 remaining was the final tally of the night.
Minnesota went 2-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
"Power play scored two games in a row, but still it's a little bit broken play," Kaprizov said, critical of the power play execution despite the two goals.
