It's been an emotional time for Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras . Those emotions came to a boil Tuesday night at Fenway Park against the Washington Nationals , per New England Sports Network.
In the fourth inning, with Boston leading 1-0, both benches cleared after Nationals' right-hander Cade Cavalli struck out Contreras. As Contreras walked away, he looked at Cavalii and mouthed the words "Are you talking to me?" Nationals' catcher Keibert Ruiz held Contreras back as both benches began to clash.
Then Contreras broke free from Ruiz, charged after Cavali, and threw his helmet. The Red Sox went on to lose 8-1. Contreas was called out on social media by fans, prompting him to respond to one fan in particualr, per Tyler Milliken of the Section 10 podcast.
A Red Sox posted on Instagram "Wilson Contreas is a p***y. And I'm a diehard Sox fan." Contreras then responded "come meet me at Fenway Park".
Ultimately, Contreras was ejected for the second consecutive game. On Monday, he was ejected in the second inning after making a gesture towards first base umpire Nic Lentz while walking back to the dugout after striking out. Over the weekend, Contreras got into it with New York Yankees pitcher Will Warren that led to a bench clearing incident .
Contreras' emotions have been all over the map. His native Venezuela experienced a massive earthquake that has already resulted in over 1,900 deaths. He hit an emotional three-run home run on Monday against the Nationals. Afterward, he was seen screaming "Venenzuela" and was crying in the dugout.
Contreras' actions and challenging a Boston fan no less clearly demonstrates a man dealing with so much at one time.
