While many expect the Wizards to go with BYU standout forward AJ Dybantsa with the number one pick, recently, ESPN NBA insider Ramona Shelburne warned folks to keep an eye out for Kansas point guard Darryn Peterson as well in a potential trade down.
"I know Michael Winger pretty well, and I know that he has the number one pick, and… if he likes Peterson, and there's somebody else who wants Dybantsa, why would you just take Peterson? You should just get something for that, right? So to me, I think Michael Winger has waited his whole life for a moment like this. He's really smart, so I think it's going to be fun to watch and see how this plays out," said Shelburne, per The Rich Eisen Show, per NBA on ESPN on X, formerly Twitter.
Indeed, if the Wizards are sold on Peterson as their franchise player moving forward, it would make sense for them to see if there would be any teams interested in trading up to number one to take Dybantsa, namely the Utah Jazz , who currently have the second selection.
While the fit with Peterson and Young might be questionable, there is certainly something to be said about drafting who a team thinks is the best player available, and then figuring out the rest later.
The NBA Draft is set for June 23.
