Time to show you the money...

🏈 Natural Grass in the NFL: #WorthTheCost?

By the time you've read this, there's a chance that the immaculate pitch at MetLife Stadium has already met its end, displaced for its artificial-turf replacement. The players who will take to that field — no longer a pitch — in the coming months are the ones most upset about it.

#WorthTheCost:On Saturday, the NFL's players voiced their displeasure with the temporary nature of the natural grass at some World Cup host venues. Their #WorthTheCost movement reignites a long-raging debate about the artificial turf that carpets half of the league's stadiums.

92% of the league's players prefer natural grass, and the installation of natural grass for the World Cup presented a high-profile opportunity to highlight what they view as an inconsistency in ownership's position.
The players' preference stems primarily from injury concerns, with the NFLPA insistent that artificial turf causes a higher incidence of non-contact lower-extremity injuries.

What does the data say?Does artificial turf actually increase the incidence of injuries? It depends who you ask.

Pre-2020, the data was supportive of the notion that players were worse off on the fake stuff. Data collected between 2012 and 2018 showed a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries on artificial turf.
By the turn of the decade, the numbers started to shift. The gap in incidence narrowed toward near-equality in 2021 — a result the NFLPA viewed as an anomaly — before reverting to prior norms in 2022.
Studies differ in their conclusions. Some studies have found a higher incidence of injuries on turf and a higher likelihood of those injuries being season-ending. Others contend that the differences in injury rates are not statistically significant.

Follow the money:Why are owners reticent to install natural grass and placate their valued employees? Turf offers revenue upside and cost savings that grass can't replicate.

Generally, venues can host a greater volume of special events (think: concerts) on artificial turf than on grass, which requires a longer post-event recovery period, limiting the number of events it can endure.
Fewer events mean less revenue. And owners of the artificially turfed stadiums have busy calendars they'd be reticent to relinquish. Alternatively, a busy concert schedule on natural grass requires costly re-sodding and repair for NFL readiness.

The grass isn't greener:Solutions at some of the world's most advanced soccer facilities raise as many questions as they do answers. Both Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Real Madrid's renovated Bernabéu feature retractable natural-grass pitches stitched with synthetic fibers.

Beneath Tottenham's retractable pitch lies an artificial playing surface used for NFL games and special events. The club generated £32 million in revenue from other events in 2024-25.
Despite the cutting-edge nature of the construction, both Madrid and Tottenham are exploring whether the retractable pitches — and the shallower soil they use — are causing a concerning uptick in injuries.

Bottom line:Though NFL players are adamant that their safety is worth the financial trade-off, NFL owners presiding over turf are unlikely to concede that it meaningfully heightens risk, particularly given the dollars at stake. Want a clue about the strength of their convictions? Look no further than the immediate removal of the World Cup's natural grass.

📸Money on the Field

London, England —Josh Kerr broke the world record in the mile, running 3:42.66 to shatter a 3:43.13 mark that had stood since 1999.

Brooks-branded: Late last year, Kerr delivered a PowerPoint presentation to his sponsor, Brooks, outlining his plans to shed more than two seconds in pursuit of the record. Brooks got to work, producing a bespoke speed-suit pattern and spikes made to suit his biomechanics. In return, Kerr produced the fastest mile ever and the biggest moment in Brooks history .*

* With all due respect to Des Linden's 2018 Boston Marathon victory.

Southport, England —New Zealand's Ryan Fox captured the Claret Jug with a birdie on the 18th hole, sinking an 11-foot putt to seal his first major victory.

Sly Fox: Entering the Open, the most Fox had ever won at a single tournament was the $1.76 million prize he claimed for winning last year's RBC Canadian Open. For his triumph on Sunday, Fox wins $3.2 million, which now represents 26% of his career earnings .

Miami, Florida —Morgan Rogers and England hung onto an early lead, defeating France 6-4 in a wildly entertaining edition of the peculiar spectacle that is the World Cup's third-place game.

British record: Just hours before Rogers took the pitch, news broke that Chelsea had reached an agreement with Aston Villa to acquire his services in a record £117 million ($157 million) transfer. Rogers is England's second hundred-million-pound player this summer; Manchester City purchased Elliott Anderson earlier this month for £116 million.

⚽️The World Cup Runneth Over

We'll always remember the 2026 World Cup for Spain's stifling defense, Messi's miracle act, and Mbappé's goalscoring exploits. Perhaps that's the most memorable thing about it: For all of the noise preceding it, it was the on-pitch action that left the most indelible mark.

But this is Y! Sports Biz, and off the pitch, the 2026 World Cup was lined from start to finish with fascinating business dynamics that may forever shape future tournaments.

Ticket prices

FIFA endured endless criticism for its ticket-pricing strategy, which kept prices high, supply low, and hater-blockers on. But once play began, it seemed that, if anything, FIFA left money on the table.

According to TicketData , 73 of the tournament's 104 matches saw their get-in prices rise since the World Cup started, compared to just 15 that fell. For 39 of the risers, prices increased by more than 50%.
The dynamic pricing strategy, particularly executed with this severity, may not work in every market. According to FIFA's budget for the next cycle, hospitality rights and ticket sales are expected to drop by $938 million from their projected record level of $3.6 billion for 2023-2026.

Record viewership

Whether fleeting or forever, America has fallen in love with soccer in the most notable summer fling since Danny met Sandy. More than 50 million people in the U.S. watched the USMNT's loss to Belgium. Almost 47 million people watched England beat Mexico. These aren't NFL numbers. These are deep-playoff, special-occasion NFL numbers. For soccer!

Looking ahead: On the strength of these numbers, the rights for future World Cups won't come cheap. Do I hear $2 billion ? And can MLS "take it from here," or will it struggle to ride the sport's surging momentum?

Hydration breaks

Broadcasters fell happily into a goldmine when FIFA revealed that not only would every game feature hydration breaks in each half, but broadcasters could also air advertisements during those breaks.

Estimates vary, but the consensus is clear that Fox generated hundreds of millions of dollars in incremental revenue from the change.
The hydration breaks will likely become a negotiating point in future rights deals. Should they become a permanent World Cup fixture, despite their unpopularity, they would juice an already rich asking price.
And could the breaks creep from this summer's Trojan horse into club competition, transforming the sport's economics and tactics?

Unclear economic impact

In 2025, FIFA estimated that the World Cup could generate $30.5 billion in economic impact in the United States, a figure that drew rising skepticism as the tournament approached. But then visitors arrived, shifting the narrative toward a more optimistic tenor. And who could ignore the Tartan Army's invasion and the kegs left dry in its wake?

Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan noted that the bank estimates the World Cup has generated approximately $20 billion in economic activity in the U.S., a significant number, though short of lofty expectations. Bank of America also noted that all 11 US host cities saw increases in year-over-year spending during the tournament.
The impact, however, may be uneven… and also unclear pending further data. For example, leisure and hospitality jobs, those most likely to benefit from tourism, fell by 61,000 in June. Hotels also saw lower-than-expected demand , with bookings tracking below initial forecasts.

Full-time:This summer, the global game changed forever, both at home and abroad. The future flow of dollars will lionize its impact across TV, ticketing, advertising, tourism, and beyond.

👕 Adidas at the Apex

As a partner to both Argentina and Spain, Adidas was assured of a World Cup triumph in yesterday's game, its sixth time supplying the winning nation in the last ten World Cups.

Locked down:Adidas has a long-term contract with Spain through 2030, which will see the partnership through its 50th year. La Roja has worn the Three Stripes in both of their World Cup victories. Meanwhile, runners-up Argentina are under contract until 2038, though the future looks dimmer in the absence of Adidas' brightest individual star, Lionel Messi.

Outside looking in:Both contestants in Saturday's third-place game between England and France are Nike-affiliated, and the Swoosh will have to wait four more years to prevent a three-striped three-peat. What do you say, USMNT?!

⚡Lightning Round

🎟️ World Cup final most expensive in SeatGeek history:Though the get-in price for tickets to yesterday's final ultimately capitulated late, the game was still the most expensive event in SeatGeek's history . Across all sales since the event was listed, prices averaged $10,809, approximately 3% higher than the 2024 Super Bowl, which previously held the record.

🏒 Connor Bedard inks Blackhawks extension:On Saturday, Connor Bedard agreed to a 5-year, $75-million extension with the Blackhawks . The deal comes in at 14.4% of the cap, below the record 17% set by the recent Leo Carlsson offer sheet. The Bedard agreement is the first domino to fall in that deal's aftermath and suggests that, for the moment, the market has not reset severely.

⚽ Telemundo lands Champions League rights:Following a successful World Cup and the recent acquisition of U.S. Spanish-language Bundesliga rights, Telemundo has added the U.S. Spanish-language Champions League rights in a three-year deal starting in 2027-28. The deal also includes UEFA's other club competitions: the Europa League, Conference League, and Super Cup.

🎱 Poolhouse raises $55 million:Poolhouse, a technology-enabled cue sports company founded by the creators of Topgolf and Puttshack, has secured a $55 million growth equity investment , led by Bluestone Equity Partners. Central to the platform is BillyQ, a gameplay system developed in collaboration with Hawkeye, which enables interactive play, automated scoring, analytics, and handicapping.

📈No Curry, No Problem

On November 13 of last year, Under Armour and Stephen Curry announced they were parting ways after a 12-year relationship. At the time, much was made of Under Armour's challenges over the last five years, the brand's gloomy future outlook, and Curry's ability to escape with his Curry Brand IP.

Fast forward:Though shares flirted with their five-year low in the wake of the announcement, Curry's departure hasn't catalyzed Under Armour's demise. Anything but. After gaining 10% last week, the stock is up 59% since November 13, as investors rally around a potential turnaround.

Li-Ning downward:Curry's new partner, Chinese giant Li Ning, is headed in the opposite direction. Since Curry's addition was announced June 1, shares are down nearly 19% in Hong Kong through Friday's close.

Bottom line:One athlete rarely moves the needle on his or her own, even one who forever altered the shape of a sport. But the story of Li Ning's Curry business and Under Armour's attempted recovery will both be written in years, not months.

🏃‍♂️ Over/Under: Josh Kerr's Predecessor

For his historic achievement in the mile, Josh Kerr will pocket $50,000 as a world-record bonus, in addition to the $20,000 prize for winning the race.

Question:When Hicham El Guerrouj set the prior record in 1999, was his world record bonus over or under $25,000?

Answer at the bottom…

🏀Million-Dollar Debut Card

On stage at Fanatics Fest, Cooper Flagg put pen to his Topps Chrome Rookie Debut Autograph card. The card will be among the most sought-after basketball cards since Topps reclaimed the NBA license in October.

Some background:The card's patch was worn on Flagg's jersey when he made his NBA debut. Topps has used the debut patch across sports to great success; Paul Skenes' card famously sold for $1.1 million in March 2025.

Million-dollar redux:If and when Flagg's card sells, it's likely to join the growing ranks of not only seven-figure sports cards but also seven-figure Flagg memorabilia. In February, Sotheby's sold the jersey from Flagg's debut privately for $1 million .

A card with a patch from the jersey could sell for more than the jersey?Yes. In fact, it's likely.

But does that make any sense? Not really! But kind of…

Go on:There are a few factors driving this odd reality.

Audience:The card-collecting community is larger than the game-worn-collecting community.
Infrastructure:Cards benefit from uniformity and standardization of grading and a more detailed set of applicable pricing and supply data, both of which give them greater appeal as currency.
Medium:Cards are encased in a protective "slab" once authenticated, with their size, portability, and storability proving advantageous relative to full jerseys, which require more care.

Still not buying it?You're not alone. Just don't be surprised when the card sells for more.

Over/Under Answer:Over! El Guerrouj earned a $50,000 bonus, exactly the same as Kerr, a fact that isn't so fun for the Scotsman .

"It was a good day for me financially but $50,000 is a ridiculous number. To get the same amount 27 years later is appalling, not to sound greedy."
