In today's edition:The Mets slow start slows revenue, sports slide into TikTok and YouTube, the Heat get held to the fire, the W stacks Ws at the break, and more.
Time to show you the money...
βΎοΈMets Revenue Wobbles Amid Struggles
(Ishika Samant/Getty Images)
At $357 million, the Mets boast MLB's highest cash payroll . Nobody will pay players more this season, not even the deferral-happy Dodgers. That sizable investment in talent has translated into dead-last standing in the NL East and the third-worst record in the NL.
Yes, but:Despite that staggering dichotomy in player investment and on-field results, revenues at Citi Field ($148.7 million) were still up 1.5% through the first six months of the year. However, that modest uptick pales relative to the 11.8% growth in the same period in 2025.
Mixed bag:Because Citi Field was financed by public money, the Mets subsidiary that owns it, Queens Ballpark Company, is required to file periodic financial disclosures. The most recent of which, first reported by Sportico's Kurt Badenhausen , depicts a team not yet financially scorned by its struggles, but at risk of enduring tougher times in the months ahead.
-
Think of these financials as encompassing what happens at the ballpark itself. They include ticketing, advertising, parking, and concessions — and the associated operating expenses — but not TV deals, league-level revenue, and player pay.
-
While more contracted revenue streams like luxury and club seating (+20.1% Y/Y) and advertising (+5.4%) have grown, lines more sensitive to short-term struggles have suffered. Parking (-20.6%) and concessions (-9.6%) have both declined, though reduced inventory from ongoing development in the area is likely weighing on the former.
-
Admissions, by far the largest revenue source at $74 million, are flat and appear vulnerable to disruption in the season's second half.
-
The company's operating income ($77.9 million) is up 2.1% in the first half, buoyed by a 20% reduction in publicity and promotions spending for a team with little to promote at present.
Luxury taxes and luxury seats:Perhaps most telling from a longer-term analysis of company results is the astonishing rise of revenue from the luxury and club seating segment.
-
Those first-half revenues are more than 5.5 times higher than in 2022, exemplifying a focus on premium offerings common across sports teams, who seek higher revenues from clientele with a greater willingness to pay and less sensitivity to on-field results.
-
In recent years, Citi Field underwent extensive renovations geared toward premium offerings , with expanded club seating and improved suites. Even in a down season, the company is reaping the fruits, as those offerings are often contracted over the longer term.
Bottom line:The Mets — and most teams — enjoy partial financial shielding from poor performance on the field in the short term. Eventually, though, that performance rears its ugly head not only at the concessions stand, but also in single-game ticketing. And, if persistent, it can creep into longer-term negotiations.
ποΈ Winning Cures All
On July 1, the Red Sox sat 11 games below .500 in last place in the AL East. Fast forward three weeks, and the team is in playoff position after notching 15 straight wins. Might their unlikely turnaround offer the Mets some hope?
Music to FSG ears:If you listen closely, you can almost hear John Henry humming "Sweet Caroline" as beer-consuming, frank-eating fans return to Fenway Park, invigorated by the sudden reversal in fortunes. The average attendance for the current homestand is up by 1,322 over the one immediately preceding the streak.
Winning cures all ails:On average, the get-in price for the next 12 games is up 27% in the last two weeks. Take, for instance, the July 26th game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Two weeks ago, the get-in price bottomed at $66. Now, you can't enter the friendly confines for less than $99, even with the streak over.

Nobody wants to become the "Old Man Yells at Cloud" meme, and in sports, there's one simple way to avoid that undesirable fate: accept that Gen-Z consumes sports on their phones and in small bites, rather than watching full games on traditional channels. It's true, and the world's biggest sports properties are acknowledging it.
Pick your stat: What do you mean they don't watch the whole game?! Small bites? I thought we were talking about sports, not a Chili's Triple Dipper. Heard, chef. But the incredulity of older sports fans doesn't reduce the mounting pile of evidence that suggests younger generations are consuming games differently.
-
Pwc says that only 19% of younger fans watch an entire game, and those that do are multitasking.
-
67% of Gen-Zers prefer consuming sports content on their phones . 39% of them opt for highlights or catch-up content over the actual game.
-
43% of Gen-Zers prefer video platforms like TikTok and YouTube to traditional TV.
Adapt or die:Major sports properties around the world aren't waiting around for younger fans to find them. Instead, they're infiltrating key discovery platforms — TikTok and YouTube — to meet them where they consume content.
The World Cup goes digital:Before this year's World Cup, FIFA announced partnerships with both TikTok and YouTube, allowing broadcasters to stream the first ten minutes of games on the platforms, in addition to providing creators with significant access to produce tournament-related content. The results were significant.
-
TikTok reported 465 million unique views of broadcaster livestreams on the platform, while the World Cup's official TikTok account generated 24.1 billion views.
-
On YouTube , more than 1.7 billion unique viewers watched World Cup-related content, with FIFA's account generating 4 billion views and adding 7.5 million new subscribers.
From the pitch to the hardwood:Last week, the NBA, WNBA, and TikTok announced a new global partnership , which features creator access, highlights, and live-game discovery.
-
The latter point is the most intriguing: TikTok GamePlan directs league content viewers toward in-app hubs, where they can find schedules and viewing details, with seamless access to live game broadcasts.
-
An NBA Finals hub generated 426,000 referrals to watch live games through the league's "Tap to Watch" feature.
Bottom line:Younger viewers won't flock to sports broadcasts by happenstance. Sports properties have recognized a need to meet them on the discovery platforms where they live, building easy-to-navigate bridges to the broadcast. Lead the horse to water and the Gen-Z viewer to the stream.

βΎ Cuban invests in A's:Harbinger Sports Partners, a sports-focused private equity firm, made a minority investment in the Las Vegas Athletics, with terms undisclosed. Harbinger counts Atlanta Falcons minority owner Rashaun Williams and Mark Cuban among its leadership, in addition to former MLB CFO Jonathan Mariner.
π NFL national revenue up to $14B:The NFL's national revenues totaled approximately $14.5 billion in 2025, up 5% from the year prior, per Sportico . Those revenues will see teams paid more than $450 million each, representing their share of league-level media deals, sponsorships, and royalties. That figure, which doesn't include any local earnings, is well in excess of the league's $279.2 million salary cap.
π° Top 3 MLB picks sign record deals:With this week's signings of No. 2 pick Grady Emerson ($9.75 million, Rays) and No. 3 pick Vahn Lackey ($9.5 million, Twins), the top three picks in this year's MLB draft have now earned the three highest signing bonuses on record. No. 1 pick Roch Cholowsky received the largest bonus at $10.35 million. The signings come as MLB and the MLBPA clash over the future state of the draft.
β³οΈ LIV season on the rocks:Amid continued questions over future funding, LIV golfer Martin Kaymer called the season-ending team championship in Michigan " highly unlikely " to be played. Kaymer's comments reflect LIV Golf's state of day-to-day uncertainty, though the U.K. event (in progress) and early August's Bedminster tournament are proceeding as planned.

π₯ Dream Job: Put the You in YouTube
(Doug Benk/Getty Images)
On Tuesday night, the Miami Heat mistakenly posted a YouTube livestream scheduled for July 27. The title: "LeBron James Introductory Press Conference." Though the video was quickly deleted — an instance of getting ahead gone wrong — the internet misses nothing. By the next day, the gaffe had gone viral.
Wanna get away?If most of us make an error at work, hundred-million-dollar gambling markets don't swing in response. At 10:30 pm ET, the Kalshi market for James' next team (with nearly $220 million in volume) had the Heat at 34.0% odds, a figure which soared overnight to a peak trade at 58.1%.
Help wanted:Like we said, the internet misses nothing. Social media users quickly noticed that the Heat had also reposted a job opening for a Director of YouTube Strategy on Tuesday. The timing, though, was coincidental — both the original posting and repost occurred before the incident.
New fans wanted:Flub aside, this is a fascinating position at the cutting-edge of what it means for professional sports teams to reach new audiences.
-
In the Heat's words, the person hired – a YouTube native — will "define what our YouTube channel becomes" and build a channel identity that "travels beyond sports fans."
-
Rather than catering to existing die-hards, the channel is "designed to captivate emerging fan audiences and cultivate the next generation of HEAT fans."
-
A posting for a Vertical Content & Growth Manager (think: Instagram, TikTok) emphasizes similar points.
Reheated:The Heat recognize that it's no longer enough to show up on traditional media channels on game days. They want to engage and create fans on key discovery platforms using formats that transcend sports. If they can do that without front-running an all-time great's free-agency decision, that's even better.
πWNBA All-Star: Biz at the Break
(Steph Chambers/Getty Images)
The chaotic early-summer sports calendar, enriched with the World Cup, Wimbledon, and The Open, now yields to a quieter period. The WNBA fills that void with All-Star Weekend in Chicago, an opportunity for the league to take center stage in a moment of continued growth.
Strong momentum:The W enters the break with reasons for encouragement, both on television and in the stands.
-
In July, the league recorded its third and fourth most-watched games in history, bolstered by broadcast network placement and the presence of Caitlin Clark .
-
The league's attendance is up 13% from the same period last year, though there is a near-even split between teams who are up and those who are down.
Hot ticket:Prices have risen sharply for Saturday night's game. The get-in price has nearly doubled in the last week to $220, per TicketData, a price that is competitive with the 2023 NHL and 2025 MLB All-Star games.
Raining threes (and cash):Conspicuously absent from the 3-Point Contest is defending champion and record-holder Sabrina Ionescu , who says she wasn't officially invited to participate. Her absence won't trouble the field. The winner will go home with $70,000 , ten grand more than last year's competition.
Most marketable:The weekend's main event, the All-Star Game, brings the league's biggest stars onto one floor. A recent analysis from Covers ranks Caitlin Clark as the WNBA's most marketable player, followed by Angel Reese , Paige Bueckers , and A'ja Wilson. Bueckers, however, received the most All-Star fan votes, trailed by Clark.
Narrative shift:The W has been shrouded in dysfunction and controversy in recent months. This weekend offers a rare moment in an unshared spotlight to celebrate the game's stars and its growth.
π° Rank 'Em: LeBron's Net Worth Nexus

LeBron James has played for three teams in his NBA career: the Cavaliers (11 seasons), Heat (4 seasons), and Lakers (8 seasons).
Question:With which team did LeBron generate the most on-court earnings? Rank them from most to least.
Answer at the bottom…
π¦Now they're just peacocking
It took only six years, but NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service turned a quarterly profit .
Sports, man:It's a monumental occasion for a platform with a rich array of sports rights, and it was on the shoulders of the NBA Playoffs and World Cup additions that Peacock finally clawed into the black.
Rank 'Em Answer:Lakers ($347M), Cavaliers ($170M), Heat ($64M), per data from Spotrac . LeBron's earnings with the Lakers alone would rank him 14th in NBA career earnings.
