The New York Yankees are looking for their third straight win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday afternoon. They started with a bang, as Ben Rice and Aaron Judge became the first teammates since 1995 with 12 or more homers in a team's first 35 games. But then, Rice, the Yankees' first baseman, left the game with a hand injury, according to a team release.
"Ben Rice exited today's game with a left hand contusion that he sustained on the pickoff attempt while playing first base in the third inning. X-rays taken were negative. He's day-to-day," the Yankees announced.
Rice left the game after fielding a pick-off attempt from starter Max Fried . The Yankees replaced him with Paul Goldschmidt , who has mostly played against left-handed starters this year. Considering Rice's X-rays were negative, that will likely continue to be Goldschmidt's role on the team.
MLB.com's Sarah Langs had the stat about Rice and Judge, "Teammates with 12+ homers each before team's 35th game: 2026 NYY Aaron Judge, Ben Rice. 1995 CLE Manny Ramirez, Paul Sorrento, 1994 COL Ellis Burks, Andres Galarraga, 1959 MLN Eddie Mathews, Henry Aaron. 1956 NYY Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra."
Rice has been blistering hot offensively, which has helped the Yankees to an AL-best record so far. He now has 12 homers after the first-inning solo shot. That tied Judge atop the team lead until the captain came to bat in the third. Judge smoked a two-run homer, scoring Rice in the process.
Judge and Rice both went yard on Orioles starter Trey Gibson, who made his MLB debut on Sunday. Those were the only three runs the Virginia native allowed in 4.2 innings of work.
Yankees fans can breathe easy after the Rice injury update during the game. The four-game set between the Orioles and Yankees concludes on Monday night in The Bronx. After that, the Texas Rangers come to Yankee Stadium, looking for revenge for the recent series in Arlington.
