- Yankees should be careful with this Rays center-field option

Cedric Mullins helped the Rays reach the World Series, but his regular-season bat is a warning for any team looking for a full-time center fielder. That includes the Yankees .
Trent Grisham elected free agency Thursday, leaving New York to examine its outfield options. Mullins is one possible name, but only if his contract permits it: his agreement with Tampa Bay includes a $10 million mutual option for 2027. Both sides would have to agree to that option. His availability must be confirmed before any pursuit.
Mullins hit .205 with 15 home runs in 137 games in 2026. He can run and has extensive experience in center, but the offensive line is not a case for handing him an everyday job without a backup plan.
His postseason role also requires context. Mullins was used as a pinch-runner during Tampa Bay's comeback in World Series Game 4. That contribution mattered; it is not proof that he will provide everyday offense in New York.

If the option is declined and the price is reasonable, I would consider him as a defensive and baserunning piece alongside another outfielder. A short deal would give the Yankees a way to protect the position without assuming a rebound at the plate.

New York could pursue a stronger hitter through a trade, bring Grisham back at the right price, or move Cody Bellinger from left field. Each solution has its own cost. Moving Bellinger, for example, creates a separate question in left, where he was a Gold Glove finalist.
The Yankees have not been shown to be negotiating with Mullins. His option, medical outlook, price and the rest of the market all remain unresolved. The attraction is a flexible role at a modest commitment, not the assumption that a World Series appearance erased his 2026 offensive struggles.
