The New York Yankees have been on fire to start the season. They have won six straight and just swept the Boston Red Sox . As the Yankees look for another solid season, they hope to add to the history of the team, winning a 28th World Series.
The Yankees’ history is littered with Hall of Famers, World Series wins, and the most iconic uniforms in baseball. The home pinstripes and away grays are something that never seems to change in the day of alternate uniforms. Now, some Yankees are pitching for an alternate jersey for the first time in franchise history, and Brendan Kuty of The Athletic is giving fans a timeline .
“A decision on the New York Yankees players’ pitch to wear alternate road jerseys for the first time in franchise history isn’t ‘imminent,’ a league source with knowledge of the conversations told The Athletic,” Kuty wrote.
Ultimately, the decision on a third jersey for the franchise will come down to owner Hal Steinbrenner. Still, there are multiple factors that come into the decision-making process, including players, fans, and the monetary impact of a third jersey.
The Yanks have had some changes to protocol in recent years. In 2023, they allowed advertisements on the jersey for the first time. Then, in 2024, they changed their long-standing facial hair policy.
The Yankees are just one of two teams without a City Connect third jersey. The other team is the Athletics , who do not have an official home city. Aaron Boone tried to side-step the question of a third jersey.
“I’m all about tradition,” he said, “but we’ve got a patch on our sleeves.”
