New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone always manages to find a way to irritate the fanbase, and he didn't fail to do just that in his latest comments regarding the Yankees' center field situation.
Currently, Trent Grisham is the starting center fielder, and Spencer Jones has been manning right field. However, once Aaron Judge returns, he will obviously head back to his perch in right.
Could that mean Jones will ultimately supplant Grisham as the starter in center?
Not according to Boone.
During a recent appearance on the Talkin' Yanks podcast, Boone sung the praises of Grisham and said that the 29-year-old will remain the top guy at the position.
"I think [Grisham] is the best option [in center field] moving forward," Boone said . "A lot of times I think there's been a handful of plays this year that have really dinged him. ... I also think he's pretty good and very reliable out there. And I still feel like his best work could be in front of him."
Boone has always been criticized by Yankees fans for being too loyal to his struggling players, and this is another example of that.
There is no way anyone can honestly say that Grisham has been good defensively in 2026.
Grisham owns a minus-7 DRS and minus-6 OAA in center field. That isn't because of a "handful of plays"; it's because he has been subpar as a whole.
Remember: last year, Grisham posted a minus-11 DRS and minus-2 OAA, but it was largely blamed on the fact that he was playing through a hamstring injury.
What's the excuse this season?
Meanwhile, the former first-round pick is slashing just .209/.306/.394 over 481 plate appearances this season. That comes after Grisham smashed 34 home runs to go along with an .811 OPS in 2025.
Many fans understandably want Jones to be the primary option in center field. He is just 25 years old and has flashed tremendous potential this season. He has been particularly good lately, batting .357 with four homers over the last two weeks.
But it doesn't seem like Boone has any intention of starting Jones over Grisham. That should be infuriating to the Bronx faithful.
