The New York Yankees could be facing another outfield injury at a crucial point in the MLB season. Center fielder Trent Grisham left Friday night's game against the San Diego Padres with right hamstring discomfort, and manager Aaron Boone provided an update afterward.
The Yankees are now waiting on imaging before deciding whether Grisham will need another stint on the injured list.

Grisham felt the hamstring while stealing

The injury happened earlier than it initially appeared. Grisham drew a walk from Padres starter Walker Buehler to open the second inning and attempted to steal second base. According to both Grisham and Boone, that was when the center fielder felt something in his hamstring.

Grisham remained in the game initially, but the issue became more apparent in the bottom half of the inning. He had difficulty getting to a ball hit into shallow center by Xander Bogaerts that dropped in for an RBI single.
After the inning, Grisham spoke with a trainer and headed toward the clubhouse. He was replaced before the third inning, with Spencer Jones moving from right field to center and Heliot Ramos entering the game in right.

Boone isn't ruling out another IL stint

The Yankees don't yet know how serious the injury is, and Boone said the team expects Grisham to undergo imaging on the hamstring.
"We'll probably be getting imaging," Boone said. "It seems like an injury. Not sure yet if it's an IL or not, but it certainly could be."
That's obviously concerning considering Grisham already missed significant time earlier this season because of the same hamstring. He was placed on the injured list in June with a moderate right hamstring strain and was expected to miss multiple weeks.
The encouraging part is that Grisham and Boone indicated the hamstring had not been bothering him since his return from that previous IL stint. Unfortunately, the issue resurfaced Friday night while Grisham was trying to steal second.

Yankees await testing before making a decision
For now, the Yankees are taking a wait-and-see approach. Grisham entered Friday's game batting .211 with 18 home runs and 59 RBIs, making him an important part of New York's outfield.
If the imaging shows another significant strain, the Yankees could once again be forced to shuffle their outfield. Spencer Jones moved into center after Grisham's exit, while Heliot Ramos took over in right.
The Yankees will have to wait for the imaging results before determining whether Grisham can avoid another extended absence. At this point, though, Boone's comments make it clear that another IL stint is very much on the table.
